I want to install a shift light, preferably in the center HVAC vent. Any suggestions for vendors/ideas would be greatly appreciated! This place rules! :)
I don't think too many of us use them, since the HUD has a "shift" warning, and the tch is a lot more easily visible than on many other cars. I've just never had the urge to buy one, though I know some have.
A Forum member referred me to Raptor Performance for a shift light and I am really happy with it. Yes, I know that you can use the tach, but that takes your eyes off the road, and you can use the HUD, but it's hard to see since it is the same color as the other readings. I was using the HUD but this light is great. I got the red light with a black housing. It's a little tough to hard-wire in, having to take the front right tire off, take the batter out, etc. but was worth the effort. I put it on the pillar to the left of the driver and it is bright enough to let you know when to shift in any sunlight, darkness, etc. It comes in several colors, including green and blue, but the red is the most popular. It can be set for the rpms you want and you can experiment to see when the best time to shift is. I find it more precise than the HUD and I'm not as likely to hit the rev limiter because regardless if you're paying attention to the tach or HUD or anything else, when that light come on you know it's time to shift.
I would easily recommend it to anyone. When I bought it a few months ago it was $75 and the people there are very responsive with good customer service. It's a good-looking unit and comes on whenever you start the car.
I looked at getting a Harlan but could never get them to email me back and am really happy that I got the Raptor. Hope this helps.
I just bought one from Extreme(yesterday). The tach is too slow and I don't like taking my eyes off the road. Some people say they go by the sound of the engine. That's fine for everyday driving but I defy anyone to hear the difference between 5900rpms and 6000. I like the looks of the Raptor but they wouldn't take a credit card (is this the year 2003?) so I bought from Extreme. I'll post after I install it.
I'm trying to find the time in the next couple of weeks to install my Raptor (pic below). I think it's the easiest to set since you just rotate the switches to the thousand/hundred rpm you want and go. The Raptor is considerably smaller than the Harlan but both are used by members here. I made a special bracket for a couple buddies here to use for their Harlan's since their bracket is not as nice as the Raptor's. I patterned it around the Raptor's (pic below). You can see the brands' size difference by looking at the difference in the brackets.
Some mount them on the A pillar, some on the center rearview, some in the ashtray area and, of course, some in the center AC vent.
We do sell the Raptor shift lights and have them in stock. We have to charge a little more than Raptor direct due using credit card for payment. They are $85 for red, green or yellow and $110 for Blue. We have most of the colors in stock though! Let me know. Thanks.
I have a Harlan shift light that I plan on installing in the center vent. It is a real small LED light that comes in many colors and is adjustable, so no buying pills. If you search Google you could prolly find it. A lot of F-body guys have them
