My '98 Z-51 6sp coupe won't run. That is, it will crank, but won't catch and run. There is one other symptom my car is exhibiting, when I push the lock button on the key fob remote, the alarm goes off.
I recently pulled the wheel well access cover by the PCM to clean up after a battery leak which occurred under the watch of the car's previous owner. When I looked in there, there didn't seem to be any damage to the wiring. Some acid had leaked onto the frame and was starting to rust. I sanded the area and hit it with some rusto-lean stop rust primer.
The car drove fine for a few days after I cleaned up from the battery acid and then yesterday I started to detect a slight miss when cruising. Last night the car just died and left me stranded (I towed it to my house). After I towed it to my house I pulled the wheel well access cover and wiggled some of the wires and she started up! I tried a little later and she once again wouldn't run.
So to summarize here are my symptoms:
1) Car won't run, but will crank
2) Alarm goes off when I push the lock button on the key fob remote
Other things to keep in mind are that I recently cleaned the battery acid from around the PCM area.
I'm thinking there are 2 possible scenarios:
1) I messed up some of the electronics when I cleaned up the battery acid.
2) Something else is causing the car not to run like a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump or bad ignition electronics.
I'm more likely to believe scenario # 1 because of the alarm going off when I use the key fob to lock the car. I guess I'm going to have to check for fuel and spark to rule out scenario # 2. What else can I try? Also where is the module which controls the factory alarm? Is it the BCM? I noticed that there was a little black box next to the PCM, what is this box? Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated, it looks like this little gremlin could be a real bear to diagnose. Thanks.
Im having a similar problem with my alarm. It goes off when I arm it. I haven't found out why yet.
As far as it cranks but doesn't start? If it turns over but you don't get the full noise of the starter engaging, you might need a new starter. I replaced mine when it did the same thing. Its not a hard or expensive fix either.
I would think it would be your security module that is located by your PCM. If something has tried to steal your car it shuts off the fuel pump or the ignition, I can’t remember which one. But that would be my guess. The codes would tell you
I used a fuel pressure guage on the fuel rail last night and all I got was 12psi with the key on and engine (obviously) not running. So I started the new thread to diagnose the fuel system. There were no codes registered by this problem on the computer. Thanks for you responses so far. extremecorvette, thanks for the info about the security module.
I had a similar issue when my last battery was about to die. Sometimes the alarm would go off when I locked it, and the key fobs would lose thier settings so I would have to constantly re-learn them.
If you rule out the battery, pull the codes from the DIC. They usually tell you exactly what the problem is when you look them up.
