Ok I finished the Job today..Had a minor setback but solved it..
First, I did an idle relearn the 1st time I started it up. No problems, no surging or air leaks...
I took a short test drive as it started to sprinkle a little..Feels just as strong as the Vortex at low speeds..But over 50 or so..It's kinda weird...I can feel it get more legs...Just cracking the throttle gives IMMEDIATE response..I had to 90 in 4th and she was pulling hard...I like it...
There was a side benefit that I was thinking about during the install and it proved to be true...
The Vortex blocks a little of the Radiator surface area. The Vararam leave the opening unobstucted...My motor usually runs a few degrees hotter with the Vortex and takes a little longer to get down to 181 duriong cruising..But with the Vararam it stayed cooler and cooled down faster.
We are only talking about 5 degrees here but I noticed it..
I now have to runs some logging and find out how lean I am .... :D
And a special thanks to Ross Bartick....For you patience, help and most of all..The Vararam...
I was told by my tuner that they tested the Vararam along with a few other intake systems and it was the "only" intake that produced a positive intake pressure at highway speeds. This is a very good thing. It proves that it is giving the engine more air than it can use. We all might think that our Vortex's and such are ramming air into the engine, but they aren't, the engine is using all of the air that they give it.
I have the vararam system in my z. I think its great I have read lots of articles on there claims on positive pressure which there is no matter how low it might be. What gets me is that Ive read on this site a figure on the amount of positive pressure the vararam puts out then they compaired it to the amount of horsepower that a blower puts out and come up with a very low figure on the max possible horsepower gain. what im trying to say is , look at all the mods we do to help the motor breath better, mass flow sensor, air bridge ,throttle body, although the positive pressure at the throttle body opening might be low, the true gain is the fact that it takes away any air flow problems a stock system has and aids the motor in breathing rather than leaving it up to the motor to suck the air in. I installed the vr1b system with the stock 2001 air bridge before my breathless performance air bridge arrived and I immediatly noticed a difference. As a matter of fact I was pretty impressed , the motor spun up faster , the tires spun a little more, and especially on the freeway the throttle response was very noticable. There are many intake systems, I feel vararam is one of the best My opinion.
Even though you did the relearn process on the vette you may need to drive it a bit more to have the computers really compensate for the changes... Enjoy! :seeya
Hey Guys,
I'm with you all the way. While I had my C5 in Germany the gang there had me sold on the Vortex Ram Air System. Fortunately, I held off on my performance mods due to import clearance concerns. After returning and connecting with a friend of mine, who coincidentally races VR's as a co-sponsorship I was quickly turned around. I purchased the VR-1B and installed it the very evening I received it. And yes, at highway speeds she just seems to gracefully pull away without that need or urge to downshift. I just love it! I haven't really been watching the temps though. But that's a very interesting observation. I'll definitely keep that in mind.
As for 'Buckmaster' question on installation, in terms of installation the instructions were clear but the images were unreadable on paper. Fortunately, they do a great job of providing this documentation on their web site so I had my wireless sitting on a rollaround stool in the garage and just referred to their web site for instruction (had to enlarge one of the images). The worst of the installation was that my shipment didn't include the accessory kit. I.e., screws, SS duck connector plate and rubber coupler. Needless to say, I was furious to be near completion at two am and not have all the parts. I called the number on the site but as it turned out that was a general line (didn't find the 24hour line until later) and I had to leave a call-back message which never got returned. The next day around noon I called again and the person I spoke with was very polite and said he'd overnight the accessory kit. That was Friday and I'm still waiting. My guess is it wasn't marked for weekend delivery so I should / hope to see it today.
Getting stuck during the wee hours of the morning was my fault though. I got excited and just dove in without doing an inventory of what was shipped. So I fired up the shop equipment and fabricated pieces so I could use my car and enjoy the new system.
Thanks!
