Will be going to the dyno soon. Can anyone give me some feedback on how to properly dyno an A4? From what I gather, I should expect 20% - 22% drivetrain loss.
Which gear? I've heard you should keep it in 2nd or 3rd.
Should converter be locked up or not? How can/do you force this?
Everytime mine has been dynoed it has been in third gear. The rpms are slow increased until it third gear is shifted into. After it shifts into third, the rpms are slowly increased until about 300 rpms and WOT is applied. This way it prevents the transmission from trying to shift into second and torque spikes. About 20% to 25% is expected depending on gearing and tire size. One would see less rwhp with 4.11 gears and 28" tires compared to 3.15 gears and 26.7" tires.
When the car is equipped with 3.15 ratio or higher then the transmission should be in 3 and you will run the car through the gears until 60-65 mph..(it's really up to the operator) then floor it to about 120 mph and let off. With 2.73 gears I used to run the dyno in 2nd with the same process..:yesnod:
With a stock converter it's likely that it will be locked almost immediately..not to worry.:D
TNTC5 - no worries about upshifting? Will the trans stay in third to the rev limiter or "protect" me and upshift right as I'm trying to make peak power numbers?
VStella - Thanks. I've got a Yank 3200 converter, but expect it should still lock as rpms and mph increase.
I've heard good things about Lamar Walden in Buford and All Speed in Peachtree City. There's also Atlanta Chassis Dyno and one or two places on the NW side of town.
Hopefully, the person operating the dyno knows all of this....if not, I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable having my car dynoed there.
Let us know how you do.

:iagree: ......a word of advice ~ it's more fun if you can join a "group" on Dyno day - you will learn so much your head will spin ! :yesnod:
Mike, FWIW, my '02 you saw last week just spent 2 days at Lamar Walden Automotive and all went quite well. They treated it with extreme care. Very competent and comfortable with C5's.
Mike, go to Lamar Walden those guys are awesome!
Ed, was that your silver 02 there two weeks ago?
If you go there this Satursday, you will see my car there TNTC5 pewter
