Differential leaks are well documented on this forum. I have a 2.73 right now that is dripping, dealer has not fixed, and I'm thinking about the 3.42 gears anyway. I'd replace it with the Getrag, which obviously is the same mfg as the stock rear end
Will I have any better luck with the 3.42 staying dry? Any one had a leaky modified rear end?
Having just experienced the leak situation, if I were going to replace a rear end, I would remove both side covers and apply a bead of Permatex Grey RTV sealer tp both covers prior to installation. This will probably cure your potential leaks.
I had 2.73's for 60k miles that didn't leak once. I replaced them with
the 3.42's and 10k miles later...no leaking. Remember with these cars
you're not just replacing the ring & pinion, but the entire assembly.
Still, even if properly installed, they can still leak. Usually they don't.
...and are you sure it's the rear-end, and not the tranny. It's in the
rear as well. Replacing the gears would certainly give you ample
opportunity to check everything once, twice over for leaks.
Re: Getrag 3.42 diff....Will it leak? (Purerock105)
Getrag is the manufacturer for ALL C5 differentials, regardless of the gear ratio.
let me clarify that...
Getrag is the manufacturer for ALL C5 differential cases, and only the 2.73, 3.15, 3.42, and 3.73 gear sets.
The 3.90 and 4.10 gear sets are not manufactured by Getrag.
I've have a 3.42 Getrag on my A4 for almost 3 years---no leaks yet :) However, it's pretty well documented, as per the many threads on this forum, there is a possibily any ratio Getrag may (has) leaked. This would not keep me from getting rid of that 2.73 "slug" gear and installing a 3.42. Good luck, what ever you decide to do. :seeya
