Just bought a new C-5 MN6 and see that is has the first to fourth to meet the gov't mileage standards. On my '92 C-4 this thing was disabled. Is there a way to disable this worthless thing on the C-5?

Yup. Lot's of forum vendors sell the little GAGS defeat kits. First mod on my C5 (and my '95 Formula 6 spd too)! HTH
If your mechanically and electrically inclined you can build what all the major suppliers sell for 18 bucks for a dollar or two, all it is a resistor, a search around the internet should be able to find that resistance for you or someone that has the CAGS eliminator might be able to measure theirs for you, it is then a matter of building a patch cable with the resistor built in. Many people would not find this worth the trouble, but i know there are still do it yourselfer's out there :) The connections are industry standard once you know the plug size.
Check out Xtreme Motor sports we carry them in the 15-20.00 range and usually have them in stock. If you will be Dynotunning soon you and you can live wiyh it it can be engaged through the pcm,I dont think the software is out yet but fo under 20.00 and 5 minutes in labor,IMHO its worth the few bucks,Dave Smilovic,XTREME
Yeah, I forget the exact resistor size but you can buy them at Radio Shack for about $1.29 for five of them. I just had the mechanic make the change when I did my first oil change.
I bought a CAGS eliminator and had it in the house weeks before my car was ready for delivery. My first Mod! At $15 it just didn't seem worth the trouble to build it myself. It installs in a few minutes. A set of Rhino ramps will allow enough room under the car for installation. Today, I cannot imagine driving without the CAGS eliminator.
I think I've hit it like 3 times in the 4 months I've owned my C5, what is the problem? if you don't want it to activate, all it takes is a little more right foot.
9 times out of 10 is I am doing a slow startup from a light or whatever [like that happens a lot] I shift first to fourth anyway without CAGS, it is not a bad habit as long as you keep the revs up and don't lug your engine...always remember none of us bought a Vette for fuel economy :steering:

It always seems to kick in on a left turn behind someone who can't get out of their own way, leaving you hanging out in front of oncoming traffic in 4th. It's cheap insurance
Can someone tell me as a dumb German what you guys are talking abt?
What is first to fourth and what is it supposed to do?
When does that come abt?? I have never seen that on my C5 manual 6 here in Germany!
Did GM disable that for us over here??
It's a 2200 ohm resistor. Just plug it into the connector, a bit of electrical tape to cover up the connector and solenoid ends, zip tie it out of the way, and you're done!
No more work than the $30 (haven't seen them for $15 anywhere) conversion kits, and you don't have to wait on them to come in the mail!

The 'First-to-Fourth' is a "feature" that, at least on US manual cars, will lock out second and third gear under gentle accelleration and low speed, forcing you to switch from first gear into fourth. It is a gas-saving feature, but it always kicks in under the most inopportune circumstances. When it is operational, i.e. when second and third gears are blocked, it is indicated by a light in the instrument panel. The CAGS Defeat device people are talking about disables the solenoid responsible for locking out second and third gear, while tricking the computer into believing that it is still connected and operational.

Re: First to Fourth (jngoldin)
I rarely hit this range but when I do I simply shift to 3rd (I just keep the clutch in as I shift, realize I'm going into 4th, and pop it up into third real quick.) At least on my car only 2nd is locked out. Of course this is annoying and I should probably do the mod. OK, next oil change.
You can buy one at any of the vedors here or jsut about any of the major suppliers. I got mine from Zip and it took more time to lift the car than to put it in.
I had CAGS disabled on my car with LS1-Edit. You might want to call a local shop and see how much it would run to have CAGS disabled, fans turned on a little earlier, etc (most of the things you get out of a chip), etc for under a hundred bucks.
Thanks jngoldin to help out on that lack of information.
We do not seem to have that feature as it has never come in on any occasion in my C5 manual 6 speed!
