Default drag radials for newbies

After a very slippery night at the strip (Ennis, TX) Friday evening on my 295 Kumhos, I've decided that I need to start gaining some knowledge about drag radials. I've read a bunch in the archives, so I've gotten a start, but I also see that the expertise out there appears to evolve as new tires come out and new combos are tried. So, I'm hoping this thread inspires some great discussion. I debated whether this was best posted in the C5 Tech or the Drag Racing section (which I only just discovered), but I chose the former since much of this might be C5 wheel/tire size dependent. For my application, I'm looking only for tires to put on, drive to the track, run, drive home, and take back off. I could also take them on/off at the track if that makes sense to do.

So, here goes. From what I read, I think the past posts show the following:

1. BFG drag radials are quite popular, although M/T ET streets have a good following but require a matching front set of bias tires or else there is some shakiness at speed. Nittos are out there, but some who have compared them to the BFGs prefer the BFGs on the track, although Nittos might be better on the street.

2. 18 inch drag radials are fairly new out there, but the tire and wheel prices are pretty stout; in contrast, many folks have had success with 315/35/17s.

3. available wheels: here I'm pretty confused. I've found mention of using ZR1 wheels for 17 inch tires or Z06 wheels for 18 inch tires. Width is debated that a 315/30/17 will fit a 9.5 inch wheel, where others say that wide of a tire is better on a 11 or 12 inch wheel. Also, I personally don't want to spend more $$ for matching or nice looking wheels for track only use, so as long as it's structurally good, I'm happy.

That's what I've read, and I have a clean slate in terms of actual experience (i.e., I'm clueless :D). So, all relevant input is appreciated and thanks in advance to all who contribute.
