Problems with Tire Pressure Sensor system in early C5s
I'm looking at a '97 Corvette for sale that appears to be a nice car, other than the tire pressure sensor system is inactive. The owner has not had it looked into, and is in a money crunch (which is why the car is for sale), so he is selling it as is. Is there a common failure mode for these?
The information system said the tire pressure system needs serviced, and NONE of the tires read a pressure. Any info is appreciated. :)
Re: Problems with Tire Pressure Sensor system in early C5s (gmf)
Not a common problem, as the sensors have a long-life battery and only operate when the car is running. I would guess that 97-98s with higher mileage will start failing soon. Expensive item to replace as dealer cost is around $500 for all four...This car may only need to have the sensors reprogammed...

Any chance he switched rims and isn't telling you? It seems very strange that all 4 don't work.

I've had one replaced on my 97. It would be very odd that all 4 are bad. It probably needs to be retrained. It takes 3 minutes to do. You could try and do it before you buy it. All you need is a nice strong magnet like one out of an old speaker.

the code will disappear after several start ups... and there is a proceedure to turn off the monitors... there is a relearn proceedure.... or the sensors may be gone.. I would try the relearn proceedure first as described above

I had my wheels and tires stolen about a month ago so I had to replace all four sensors. They ran about 125 a piece and then i had to get them reprogramed for about 40 bucks. so worse case, you might have to replace them all or you might just have to get them reprogramed.

I have a 98 Coupe...just had one go bad. Bought a replacement, had it installed, did the relearn procedure...A OK now. Internal batteries are only good for about 5 years. I plan to replace as needed. You can find them slightly used for about $50/each.

Another thought. Does the remote key fob work? I believe it is on the same receiver as the tire pressure sensors. It just doesn't make sense to me that all 4 sensors are out.
Also did you check with him about changing wheels?
