I took my car to the Lexus dealership to get my state inspection and it failed. I took it here last year and it passed just fine. This time they said it failed because of the aftermarket exhaust. I talked to several service reps and the tech that did the test and he said that it failed the OBD II O2 test...the test was not performed, the OBD II test could not be started, to my car failed. They said I could take it back within 15 days to get it tested again but I told them what was the point of bringing it back if the problem was with their diagnostics not being able to test the rear O2's? It would be different if it failed the test alltogether...then I can understand...maybe running some RXP through it or something. But if it is a matter of their computer not being able to connect to run the test...how is that my fault. Well after talking to them for a while...it turns out that it MAY be due to the fact that I reset all my codes this morning...and since there was no history for their computer to look at, the test was not run. Their advice was to drive the car for a couple of days and then to take it back so that they can check it again. What do yall think?

First problem .. you took it to a Lexus dealer - probably didn't know what they were working on !! :p: J/K !
If you still have your cats the aftermarket exhaust won't keep it from passing. They're probably right about just driving it around a couple of days and see what happens. Unless the cam is causing the problem - is new since last years inspection ? Most stock LS1 engines can almost pass the EPA inspection without the cats they burn so good !
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (los7883)
Are you sure you don't have a bad O2 sensor? In Cal., the OBDII part of the test just looks for failure codes that are set in memory (like the Service Engine light). I don't think the OBDII test actually checks for the value of emissions.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (los7883)
The OBDII transmission protocoll is most likely not compatible. An ODBII scanner for a ford can not be used on GM for example. Most likely, their scanner could not even connect to the computer.
Go to a GM dealer to perform the tests.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (rhoeven)
If you took the car to the same place last year and it passed then I don’t think it failed this year because their equipment was incompatible. I also don’t think it failed because you didn’t show any codes. Frankly, that just doesn’t make sense.
On the contrary, one or more of the codes you erased in the morning probably came back. While some codes wouldn’t flunk you, an emission related one probably would. Check your codes and see what’s up.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (rhoeven)
Crap...just hooked up my EFI Live and ran OBD II system checks and checked O2's all the way around...all O2's are working and sending out data...but on the System Test I got the same errors that the dealership got. Here are their results:
MIL Command Status: Off
MIL Engine On: Pass
MIL Engine Off: Pass
Misfire: Ready
Fuel System: Ready
Comp Cmpnt: Ready
Catalyst: N/S
Heated Cat: Not Ready
Evap: Ready
2nd Sys: Ready
Air Cond: Not Ready
O2 Sensor: Ready
O2 Sensor Heater: Not Ready
EGR System: Ready
DLC: Pass
Gas Cap Integrity: Pass
Safety Items: Pass
Fault Codes:
Here is what I got on mine: Click on image to enlarge it.
So I don't think it's their computers...something's acting weird...could it be that since I just had the car tuned again the day before yesterday the car is acting a little froggy? Should I just unhook the battery and do a relearn to see if everything resets? This has never happened before so I'm kinda stumped...thanks for the help.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (rhoeven)
Hum, this is interesting. Mine failed last year and the OBDII scan tool that was used picked up the history code even though I cleared it just prior to going in, so it may clear it from the DIC, but it is still stored somewhere in there. My failure was a AIR malfunction on start up. I fixed the problem and just drove it around for a few days and went back in. I did not go to a GM dealer, just a normal check station and they had the stuff to do it. Even if you clear the codes the ODB tools can still down load them.
The tool that my guy used had a selection for all make and model cars. They just select the year and make/model and up she comes!
Looking at you codes, it looks funny to me that some are showing not ready?? I would do what you suggest, and disconnect the battery and go through the relearn.

Ok...I'm reading the results they gave me and this is what I've found:
FAQ's
Why did my vehicle fail the "Readiness Monitor" portion of the inspection?
Because more than two monitors in your vehicle's compuer are set to "Not Ready." The monitors must be set to "Ready" before the car can pass the "Readiness Monitor" portion of the inspection.
What causes the monitors to be "Not Ready?"
Disconnecting the battery is the most common reason the monitors are "Not Ready." Some examples of battery disconnection are: Engine tune-ups, battery replacement, radio installations, and alarm installations.
Does my car need repairs?
Not necessarily. Your vehicle may only need to be driven in a pattern that causes the system to change the monitors from "Not Ready" to "Ready." The drive patterns, or drive cycles, for your vehicle should be available from your vehicle service advisor or qualified vehicle service technician.
Well this makes me feel a little bit better...does anyone know the drive cycle right off the top of their head? I have read it somewhere but can't remember.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (los7883)
Check your codes on the DIC. If you still don't show any codes then it's probably because some tests have to fail a certain number of times before it triggers a DTC code. Driving it around for a few days will probably fulfill the requirements for setting the code(s).
Once you know what the DTC code is you'll know what your problem is.

That's why. The PCM needs to have a certain number of cycles to make everything "Ready". Drive it a couple days and then retest. This will probably guarantee that the test will run, not that you will pass.

Heated Cat: Not Ready
Air Cond: Not Ready
O2 Sensor Heater: Not Ready
In Texas, I think you can only have a max. of 2 "Not Ready's". Since you had 3, it flunked you. I'd drive it around a number of miles. I am pretty sure you can't reset the codes out in the parking lot and then drive in and pass. "They are pretty cotton to that already."
I am facing a even bigger batle than you come February. I have not found anybody yet with a BIG cam here in Dallas that said they pass the test (with cats). I have not scanned mine lately, but I know I have a code thrown due to the cam. I posted on LS1.com and got no answers about anyone with these big cams passing (legally that is). :D

This is just one more reason I love to live in FL.

Ok, just drove it around again...now getting PCM P0751 Shift Solenoid A Performance or Stuck Off....hmmm....any idea how many drive cycles it may take to "reset" everything? Should I go clear this code or leave it alone for now?
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (los7883)
I wouldn't clear any codes for now even though that doesn't appear to be emission related. Different codes may require different numbers of ignition cycles to set. Some codes are related to cold startup and may require a few of cold starts if they are going to set.
I don't have my service manual handy but from memory, 4 seems to be a popular number for a test to be run before a failure is recorded and a code sets. Also, depending on the test there are often other parameters such as temperature for the test to run.
Re: Need some help...just failed state inspection. (los7883)
That hookup to your car reads the long term fuel trims, by erasing that info... it failed the test. Go out and drive your car everyday starting it up, driving it, letting it cool down, then do it again. by 10 days or so you will have all the info you will need in the computer to pass...
Let this be lesson to everyone who has to take a smog test... DO NOT RESET THE COMPUTER BEFORE GOING IN FOR THE TEST!! :nono:
