Yesterday I installed my new set of MSD spark plug wires along with NGK IRIDIUM plugs. I wanted to change my wires because my car was bogging a little in 2 nd gear and thought it had to be the plugs and wires (and it gave me an excuse to mod.! ) As I removed each wire I checked for problems. When I pulled on the #7 wire it broke apart in my hand. It didn't snap, it just crumbled. The wire was completely fried!!! :mad I could not believe it. I have a set of Tri-flo after market headers on the car but they clear all the wires. So I checked with someone (Local Tuner) and he told me that the stock wire from GM are very very cheap. The heat rating on them is not enuf once after market headers are installed.
So my advice to anyone running the stock plugs and wires is to change them right away regardless of the mileage or age of your car. Especially if you have changed the headers on your car.
The new Plugs and wires run great, no radio noise, and very smooth idle. And best of all no more BOG!!! Problem solved.
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (C5JONNY)
No matter which wires you end up using, make sure you have heat shields on them and there is clearance between them and the header. It is only a matter of time before the heat will ruin them.

Same thing happened to me on my '98 with stock headers at around 30,000 miles.
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (1 BAD C5)
Jumping in a bit late here - planning on doing my plugs and wires soon - any particular brands/models of plugs and wires that folks prefer, and any in particular to avoid?
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (JakeL)
I went with MSD 8.5mm and NGK TR55 Iridiums. MUCH better then stock. My bogging stopped right away and I feel like the car is running much smoother...... You can't go wrong with this set up.
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (2KVETT)
Thanks for the warning. I have SLP headers and know I should have replaced my stock wires long ago. I think this might give me the incentive to do it. :D
On a different note, are there any special tools required to change plugs and wires on a C5? some memory is tickling me that a particular swivel socket from Snap-On makes the job much easier?
I've already got a few spark-plug sockets that should turn the trick, but it looks like #4 (driver's rearmost cyl?) will be a pain to get to without a neato swivel dealie.
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (2KVETT)
I had the same problem with my B&B headers, nice bolt on SS headers except that they burnt wires, switched them for stainless works and problems gone.
Re: WARNING!!!!! Check those plug wires!!!!!!!!!! (OPEN PLZ)
I also have theB&B shorty headers, coated inside and out. Still burnt two sets of wires before I got smart and put "socks" on. I bought the GM upgrade wires and the sheilds from Xtreme for less than a 100 dollars. It always seems to be the driver side, second from the fire wall that fries. :auto:
