i have 178 degree therm and have the predator with the fans on at 170 degree. I cannot get the car to run below 192 degree even at night on the freeway. what can I do? :banghead:
An engine that runs 15-20 degrees over the T-stat is a good thing. And by th way, turning your fans on at a LOWER temp than the T-stat opens is a waste... because water doesn't even start flowing through the system until the t-stat opens.
I assume the 178 thermostat is an aftermarket product.
There are many posts on this forum from owners complaining about the inaccuracy of these units.
Also, the setting of the fan switch on point should never be lower than the thermostat opening temp.

192F is just fine. The thermostat just controls WHEN coolant begins to flow, the innate cooling performance of the system will determine the maximum temperature. In other words, if the lowest temperature the system can cool to is 192F, then it does not matter if the thermostat opens at 100F / 150F / 180F / etc, the temperature will settle at 192F.
Also note the fan comments above, turning the fans on before the thermostat opens, does not cool the engine as the coolant is not flowing through the radiator.
Low temperature thermostats delay the engine getting up to operating temperature. This delay increases wear on the engine and wastes gas as the fuel injection system stays in Open Loop operation longer.
FWIW, the LS1 & LS6 engine are not like the old LT1's... the old LT1's produce more HP when cold... the LS1 & LS6 produce more when hot... the only reason you would want to run the engine colder is when you are running a Forced Induction setup! :yesnod:
I absolutlely know your problem.. When you said, even at night, it wont go below 192 F.
if the outside temp is 60 F, your fans are running, and you can not get below 192 F... your problem is your thermostat.. no ifs, ands or butts.... Guaranteed that you have a 192 thermostat. I dont care what the box said.. I had it happen to me... and we had a week long thread going about some after market thermostats. Many people have complained about BPP's thermostats.. but other are also at fault... I bought a 178F. and a 160 F ...when I tested these stats in a pot of water with a meat thermometer they both opened at 192.. my suspicions were correct in that some people in the industry are packaging stock stats in boxes that say 160.... or 172.. or 178....Too many people have had this happen to be a coincidence... anyway I like other bought a Hypertech stat.. made in germany.. I bought a 160 F... and guess what ... when I tested it.. soon as the water in the pot hit 160 F. the stat opened.. Your problem is your stat.. also you need to rethink your fan settings.. if you want top run a 178 stat then you need to set your fan on temp to 195 F... and your off temp at 185 F... you do not want your fans running all the time... besides that your pcm monitors your compressor head pressure...when it see a head pressure rise of 20 psi it automatically cyckes the high speed fans.... both fand have high and low speed capabilities..
Here in Philly I run a stock stat throught the winter..November, Dec, Jan, feb, march.. I use a 160 the rest of the time.. it take me five minutes to swap out stats.. I.M. me if you need aditional help... also clesnliness of the condensor and radiator areimportant issues in a C5,,,
Good Luck
