My 6 speed sometimes won't go into reverse gear. It takes 2 hands to push it all the way over and up. Can this be remedied by switching to the synthetic fluids? What could be wrong? It does not happen all the time, possibly when it gets hot after driving awhile. Can this be due to the heat?
On a side note, is a z06 transmission a direct bolt in for my 98 vert? How much would a z06 transmission cost?
Reverse gears are not syncronized and therefore the teeth will sometimes meet and not mesh. This is true of all manual transmissions I have ever seen and repaired. Letting the clutch out in neutral and trying again to shift usually will achieve results. There is probably nothing wrong with your transmission.
I thought that the t56's are syncho'd for rev. Well anyway, yeah you might need to double clutch it. Sometimes, I'd stick it in first and then move it to rev and it will go right in.
Reverse gear IS synchronized, and if it wont go in after putting in a foward gear, all is not well :nonod: The good news is that you dont have to remove the trans to replace reverse gear and synchro, just the rear end and rear housing :yesnod:

With the clutch in, shift it into 3rd, then to 4th, then put it in reverse...if you do this, it will slide right in 99.9% of the time.
I don't know the reasoning of why this works, but people told me of this trick not long after I bought my car and it works great every time.
I'll be damned, it is synchronized! That being the case, the shift to reverse should go easier if you allow the clutch to spin the gears in neutral momentarily before the reverse shift is made. If not, then the same principal of a non synchronized transmission will occur. My 2003 shifts right into reverse and I always go to neutral and let the clutch out and then back in right before the reverse shift.
Guys, our MN6 cars have a reverse lock-out feature which prevents you from engaging reverse above certain speeds. I was having similar touble engaging reverse..even with two hands. Took it the dealer and they replaced the cable to the lock-out switch and the problem disappeared. Might be worth a visit to the dealer. Hope this helps.

Based on your description it sounds like you are having trouble getting it past the reverse lockout if you have to use two hands to push it to the side. If it was a gear meshing problem you could push forward with a bulldozer and still not get the gears to engage. The reverse lockout has a spring that is engaged when forward speed is over a couple of mph. That is what keeps the shifter from going into reverse when you are shifting into 5th by pushing sideways and forward. The reason a spring is used is in case the lockout fails into a permanent lockout mode. With a lot of force the spring can be overridden so the car is driveable. Have somebody check the reverse lockout electrical connections.
