Has anyone ever noticed a slight misfire when idling or crusing at 1500-200 RPM (I know, I should never cruise that slow). My car has developed these symptoms recently. 34k miles, original plugs and wires. Would that be a good place to start? Any input would be appreciated.
Dosn't seem like a lot of miles for something to mess up already but hey, why not upgrade now? I just installed new NGK iridiums and they made my car (which I thought was running fine) run much smoother. I have 76,000 miles. I am going to get some new wires next. I am thinking about the magnecors. http://www.magnecor.com/
I had similar symptoms at about 20,000 miles. Noticed a misfire when cruising at low rpm and trying to accelerate. Ended up being a loose plug wire on coil end.
Gently pull on each plug wire at coil end and plug end to see if any are loose.
I found one loose at the coil. The end of the wire was green with corrosion and the end of the coil was the same. Just clean it up with some elec. contact cleaner and put it back together. You will also want to check codes.
Good luck. :steering: :steering:
There is a pretty good chance, if you have Delco plugs, that several are missing the very small piece of platinum that is/was welded to the bottom electrode. This causes a large gap that gets even bigger rather quickly.
Also check your park plug wires to make sure they don't exceed >700 ohms although I don't think they fail often on a stock header set up.
Replaced my Wires and Plugs Yesterday. I had a rough idle and an occasional "hit" misfire when crusing. Investigation of the plugs was that 6 of the 8 was missing the small platinum piece yielding a larger gap than spec.
After replacing plugs and wires, she idles very smoothly and runs great.
Many thanks to Walter for his help on the change out.
My 98 had 37K miles and was missing all pucks on spark plugs! After replacing those with NGK TR 55's still had a few misfires on an Autotap read, replaced wires and everything is GOOD! Good luck with factory plugs, I remember mine were very difficult to remove.(GM doesn't believe in anti-sieze compound on threads of spark plugs)
Thanks for all the input. I will take a look at the plugs and wires this week. If that doesn't work, I guess I'll break down and take it to the dealership.
When I replaced my plugs(48,000 miles) one was gapped at .70 and several were missing the plug. They are in there very tight so make sure the engine is cold and be sure to use antiseize when you replace them.
