Slickdude, I have read every thread for the past month on intakes and I don't really know (proof positive) if any work. The Vararam and blackwing get the most positive write-ups. I liked the vararam filter that they use for racing. It sounds like it has a very low pressure drop but then you are giving up some filtration. That filter (they say) buys you 10 HP?? again who knows. Oh by the way, I have your switch......
Re: Are these things worth it????? (fast2000vette)
I would just mod your stock air box, hack out the MAF screen and add a K&N filter. Seems to be the best bang for the buck. I did mine and it seemed to help. Sounds a LOT better anyway. The wife even noticed the difference.
I am pondering the purchase of a VARARAM for my 98.

While I am not familiar with the "Chevy Corvette C5 97-00 RACING Intake Kit ", however, I do have a Donaldson Blackwing which I highly recommend. The Donaldson is about $200 from http://www.exit28motorsports.com. I noticed a definite SOTP (Seat of the pants) improvement after I installed the Blackwing.

I purchased a used Blackwing for $125 from Extreme. It was worth every cent, and far better than my drilled stock lid with K&N. Plus, half the forum can answer Blackwing questions.
I use a Twin Flow air intake from RM Racing c/w the cold air screens. Not many people in the fourm go with this intake for what ever reason. I have had it on my car for about 3 years and have never had a problem with water or dirt getting into the motor. The cold air screens help big time especially when on the Highway. You match that up with a new MAF, Power Duct, and new T.Body adn you have some serious air flow going into your motor. This set up work for me very well. No risk of damage to my motor, and plenty of added horse power.
I have a Granatelli dual cone intake system, see pic below, for 219$ inclduing shipping, got the dual cone filters, larger air bridge, smooth tube to replace the accordion duct, so the only thing still stock in front of the throttle body is the MAF, read my other threads cautioning against larger maf's, according to the C5 aero engineer expert who is a friend of mine, the motor as stock cannot use more air than the stock MAF allows so you are wasting your money.
as far as performance, I definitely noticed more responsiveness in the 1500-3500 rpm range, that low range punch stock air intakes lack. Sounds sweeter though there is a slight whine at idle [very quiet but there] due to the amount of air being sucked in.
From a fact based engineering standpoint, an air intake is the cheapest most important MOD you can make because the beancounters decided that an air starved LS1 would be ok to produce :)
