Wanting to know the differences between 1997/1998 and 1999 vettes
I am looking to by my first vette. I want a C5 vert. I have been told that the 1997-1998 have more problems being the first two years built. If so I would spend more to get a nice 1999. Does anyone have some info on the problems or options differences between these years? I also want HUD, does the 1997-1998 years have hud? :chevy

There is a real good article on the engine changes at http://www.corvettecavalry.com and click on link at bottom of page "99 Hidden HP". I have a 98 and don't have the HUD display nor do I think it was offered until 99 but not sure. Having said that, with my Chrome Y2K wheels everyone who sees the car think its a new one!

The 97s have the same or fewer problems. They only built 9752 of them. Production line was not run at full speed. First year car problems are an old maids tale from the dark ages of the auto industry. The real differences are in what was offered.
The 97 had only the coupe and a limited selection of colors.
The 98 saw the convertible and active handling
The 99 saw the fixed roof coupe, heads up display and magnetic red

Bill, Thanks for the info. I think I will hold out for a 1999 because I like the HUD. Let me know if you get a good line on a 1999 vert. Pewter or Red.

Thanks for the note. I agree I think the 1999 will be worth the difference for me. let me know if you get a line on a nice 1999 Pewter or Red for around 30k.

I too researched this before getting my first Corvette, a 98. I am leery of first year models no matter who makes it, and a 99 did not seem to offer much more bang for the buck; I looked at a newer 98 with active handling (basically a 99), and the extra 2-3 grand was not worth it to me. It all depends on how much cash you are willing to part with!
