Identifying gear housing.
Thanks,
Eric

1st part of serial number
a = 2.73
b = 3.42
c = 3.15
g = 3.42 (Z06 shot peened ring and pinion unit)
2nd place in seriel number:
month built
3rd place = year built
Also,
On top of a 2.73 casing there will be the letter 'A' about 1 inch tall
On top of the other casings there will be a letter 'B' about 1 inch tall
The 2.73 casing is much less robust than the 3.15 - 3.42 case.

With all due respect and just out of curiosity, where have you gotton this information? Have you measured or observed this for yourself, or is it just recycled information found on the "net"?
The reason I ask is because we have found, measured and observed, with experience, that there is NO structural or strength differences/weaknesses between the 3-series and 2-series diffs.
I see this unfounded information all the time floating around on the net and often wondered where it came from. It seems like if someone says something long enough on the net, whether right or wrong, it becomes gospel. If I put a 2-series and 3-series diff. next to each other and asked you to indentify which one is which, you would not be able to tell the difference aside from un-important identification markings.
We've been there and done that w/ these diffs. and I can tell you with complete certainty, that there is absolutely NO difference in these cases from a structural standpoint.
Not throwing stones at you in any way, just wanted to clarify a common unknown, so hopefull no offense is taken :) Have a good day gents!

Phil- DTE

I've spoken at length with the Getrag USA Plant/Manufacturing Manager, Blair Nuzman, a while back. I can forward you his information if you like.

While many of the parts of all the C5 differentials carry the same part numbers no matter what the gear ratio is, some do not. One of the parts that have multiple numbers is the differential case. For the 2.73’s, the number is 12458128 while the rest of the gear ratios use 12458101. The 12458101 number includes the 3.15 ratio so we can rule out that 2.73 case is special because it’s for the automatic.
With GM being such a bean counter, I can see no reason for the two different cases as well as the other parts that have different numbers being made unless it is because the 2.73 unique parts are somehow cheaper to make. Since the 2.73 parts appear to be interchangeable with the alternate parts, the difference must be something that is hard to see such as relative strength.
