I have been looking at some '01 Z06s and was trying to find out about the oil problem. I understand that some of them have an oil consumption problem but that GM fixed it mid year. What are the cause, fix and time frame when they changed? The one that I have been considering has a build date of 5-25-01. Thank you in advance for your comments.

This topic is a sore spot for both GM and vette owners. chances are you won't get much help here on this problem. some are in denial. it also took gm about 4 years to even admit to this issue let alone work on a fix......
New pistons came out in spring of 01, however the new ring setup was introduced in the Z06 with the 2002 model year. I would get an 02 myself, given a choice. Better valve train, new piston and ring design, etc.

Re: '01 Z06 oil problem question
There is a TSB for this issue, and can be fixed without too much trouble. You have to take it in and tell them you're having the problem. They will then start an "oil consumption" test. If you use 1qt within 2000 miles then they will proceed with the repair. This includes two different fixes, that may or may not be done together. So you may end up getting the first fix (I for get exactly what it is, something to do with the PCV system), and then have to come back again for the rering if it continues to use oil at the 1qt/2000 mile rate. I'm in the middle of the test right now, and the dealer had no problem with starting it for me and new exactly what I was talking about.
As to buying an 01 or 02, while I love my 01 I would definitely go for the 02 if you can afford it. It's not a huge difference in power, but when you combine all the little changes and the HUD (really wish I had that), it makes it worth it if you can find one for only a few grand more.
Mine runs like Hell and I put a quart in every 2000 miles. Big Deal! Porsches burn oil twice as fast and cost twice as much. Sounds like we got a Hell of a deal!
Thank you all for the input on this issue. I have done some more research and see that they went with a coated piston in 01 and then changed the scraper ring in 02. I would love to go with the 02 but the wife is getting a tad bit testy on the price of the 02s. The 01 that I am looking at will be a great deal if I can get it worked but I really wanted to know what I was getting in to as far as this problem. Thanks again for all the help and maybe soon our 97 will be replaced with a Z06.
