Technically, it is a 4-speed automatic transmission, with the 4th gear being the overdrive gear. (1st Gear: 3.059:1, 2nd Gear: 1.625:1, 3rd Gear: 1.000:1, 4th Gear: 0.696:1).
Is the A4 tranny a 4 speed with an overdrive or is it a 3 speed with an overdrive.
Thanks,
I believe it would be considered a 3 speed with with a variable ratio torque converter and a lock up feature. The transmission itself only has 3 gears? Somebody correct me if I am wrong?

Ok, I'll correct you.
It is a 4-speed auto trans. It has four gears in the planetary system (ratios shown in previous post), and one reverse gear (ratio: 2.294:1), it also has a locking torque converter. However, overdrive is supplied through the 4th gear, not via the torque converter, and the TC will lock up in 3rd and/or 4th gear.
In D overdrive, the 3-4 gear clutch, 2-4 band and forward clutch are applied locking in fourth gear to allow for the overdrive gearing.
My A4 converter locks up at approx 43 mph in fourth gear with minimum throttle. When it does, the rpm drops approx 150 -200 rpm so it is like having a 5-speed auto. :D :D
