I see the 1st instruction is to unlock using the cigarette lighter adapter..
This forces the pin to unlock.. ok...I understand that. But.. They say you must do this..I am confused...I thought you only did this if the BCM refused to unlock it..
I have a flakey Column Lock.. Once I got it unlocked I never took the key out...Since the key never came out that means the column is not locked...
Why cant I just unplug the CL while it is in that state? The BCM already thinks it's unlocked.. then I can just plug the bypass in at that point right?
I am just afraid to do anything to let that pin lock again before I put the bypass on..
The only reason to use the cigarette lighter plug thingy is to prevent a code from being set. If the locking pin is retracted, you can pull the 4pin connector and install your CLB kit. Just erase the code and you should be fine.
Personally, this is the way I recommend others to install the CLB, as its much faster and safer than jabbing the 2 bare wires (of the cigarette-lighter-thingy) into the connector to release the locking pin.
TexasRed, my CLB does not come with 2 wires to "jab into the connector"...it comes with the proper GM connector so its safe and easy. Not sure why anybody would make one with two bare wires to jab in. Strange.
Chuckster, like Texas said, you can just remove it/install it like the car is now. If your battery is still hooked up, it'll set a code and you'll have to clear it. If your battery isnt, <shrug>...it'll probably never know the difference.
When you pull the key on your C5, the column locks preventing you from turning the wheel, requiring the use of the cigarette lighter cable. If your column lock is broken in the unlock position, then you won't need to use the cigarette lighter cable. The instructions assume you have a C5 with no key in the ignition, so the column will naturally lock.
The cigarette plug leads being bare will not hurt anything. The worst you can do is short the two wires together and blow a fuse.

I was refering to the cigarette lighter cord with the two bare wires........ not the CLB module. (although I do remember the first generation CLB Kits manufactured were soldered in instead of plug-in)
Also, I have read of a few knuckleheads that stuck the 12v power source into the BCM connector end instead of the column lock connector end....... frying their computer. This is why I think its better to just unlock the column with your ignition key and reset the code.

You guys have got me lost. Must be senility setting in. Charlie, I want you to become proficient installing these, then when I get back to Florida I'll be over and you can do mine. What are you going to charge me?

I have a rule.. Never charge for anything that you would do for a friend for free. I consider a fellow Vetter a friend... ;)

Texas red, you and I are talking about the exact same part. I do not understand why anybody would not put a connector on there...2 bare wires seems like a pretty messed up idea. Either way, like I said, mine has the connector on it.
