Default 1998 Pinging & Tapping

I was driving home from the Corvettes at Carlisle show this past weekend and noticed a slight pinging and tapping between 70 and 80 mph. I have a '98 with 32,000 miles. Is this normal or a known issue? Would it be better with new plugs (NGK) and wires (MSD)?

Thanks for the advice...

My '99 had some pinging issues which I thought may have been "normal" down here in the Texas heat. Anyway, since buying the car back in June, I've been doing what I consider to be the routine maintenance on the car after 45K miles; i.e.; Redline synthetics in the driveline, NGK plugs (4 out of 8 platinum discs were missing on the AC/Delco "100K mile plugs", MSD wires, etc) including changing the fuel filter, even though the fuel filter isn't listed on the GM maintenance schedule. Well, guess what, after changing the fuel filter, all my pinging is *GONE*. I don't know if it was clogged up or if the internal diaphram wasn't functioning properly, but a new fuel filter has been my "best mod" to date! The engine is more responsive and even the exhaust note is more authorative. . . :yesnod:

Cash (don't know why fuel filters aren't on the schedule?) Mullen
