I think someone either knocked into it or something because it was swinging freely resulting in me taping it to the stem of the door. I hope that made sense. I took the mirror off to see why it was loose and discovered that the washer that holds down the spring had come off. The problem is the spring is so stiff that I can't push it down enough to lock the spring back in place. Has anyone had this problem before, and if so could you please give me some suggestions on how to fix it.
I had the same problem I was able to reattach the spring but the mirror would just spin loosly on the pedistal........... solution.........new mirror from gm.

I have the same feeling that I may be visiting my nearest GM dealer in the near future.
Hey guys...don't buy a new mirror until you give this guy a try. He is the only one I know of that repairs the mirrors correctly, and it is a lot cheaper than a new mirror + paint.

Note: The above fix I referenced is to restore full mirror functionality. Epoxy certainly will fix it, but it will not be the same as before the break.
Hey, this happened to me on the drivers side mirror about a month ago, and then 8-28-03,Thursday the passenger side mirror just broke! The dealer said it can't be fixed, so it looks like I am out another $485.00 for another mirror. I think there has to be a defect on this mirror! My car is an 1998. I called my service guy this morning to have him call the factory to see if they had been recalled. This is ridiculous.

bonded mine back on. But it loosened. epoxy is better? Any brand suggestions? drvalidus@yahoo.com
I can't recall the brand name, but I do know it was in a purple package I bought from walmart. It is a 2 part epoxy. I think the package said "2 TON EPOXY" there was also a "5 MINUTE EPOXY" that supposively dried quicker, but I wanted the stronger one, so I got the 2 ton.
It was easy to do. just mix the 2 parts equally (really can't mess this up since the way the handle squeezes out both at the same time) mix with a toothpick or small plastic knife/ fork, whatever, as long as it is disposable. Then when it turns a milky color, I lifted up the mirror where I could see the metal base it sits on, and put a coat of mixed epoxy on top of that. Then, I gently pushed the mirror back down, and turned it to where I could feel it stopping. I held it there with my hand putting a little bit of pressure on it for about 10~15 minutes. I then let it dry overnight. I did this about 2 months ago, and still holds strong. No more having to reach out the window to move it back when I hit a pothole, or after I close the door. And you can't even tell I ever did anything to it.

:iagree: with trying the epoxy approach, as I once used "red loctite" on a swiveling car mirror and it held. I've used epoxy on a Harley softail mirror that used to vibrate out of position--it held, and still had enough "friction" that I was able to adjust from time to time.
Before buying a mirror, the other solutions are worth a try.
