Default HUD installation

I'm looking at putting a HUD in my 99 Coupe. I know that the cars equipped with it had a special coating on the windshield to make it more reflective. Does anyone who used the stock windshield have any pictures of the HUD displayed in it? I've seen posts where people say they have used the stock windshield but would like to see pictures of it before going through the trouble of ripping my dash apart.

Do a search on "HUD" or "Head Up Display". I will be doing the same to my '99 this winter. Many forum members have done this with no problem and can't tell the difference. Some have said that during bright sunny days if the driving towards the sun, it makes a little difference. Certainly not worth the $1500 cost for a new windshield with the coatings.

This was the best mod I've done so far. Don't have any seat time in a car with the special windsheild as a comparison, but it seems quite clear in most situations. :smash:

Here you go...did it in my last pace car...you don't need to change the windshield...unless you can't read my HUD as follows :) Click on picture for larger version...

 Looks good to me. I think I'll be doing this within the next couple of months provided I get ahold of the parts by then. I've looked at all the posts on CF for doing this mod and it looks relatively easy and is a very  mod.

The HUD image (seen at the end of your hood) is not effected by windshield selection. What is effected is the reflection of the HUD projector on your windshield. A HUD windshield has been treated to minimize this reflection whereas the non HUD has more reflection and can be a PITA under certain lighting conditions... I converted my '98 to HUD.

Thanks for the info. I don't know what I would do without this forum. I just sent a couple of requests to Vette2Vette and Gene's Kar Shop about the parts. I'm going to go ahead and do the upgrade. If the projector reflection becomes too much of a PITA I'll do the windshield down the road. However most people seem to be more than satisfied with the stock windshield. :seeya

Wow, this is fun. :( Called a local salvage yard and they wanted $700 just for the projector or $800 for projector and cluster, and get this, they couldn't get the 11 pin connector anywhere. :skep: WTF? Is there a thief running around stealing HUD harnesses out of wrecked C5s? Anyway, I contacted Gene's Kar Shop and they're supposed to contact me when they get another one in. $650 for projector,Cluster, and cable. I can't wait to get this baby installed.

The membrane in the center of the windshield (which helps prevent the windshield from shattering) is flat in the standard windshield and wedge shaped in the HUD windshield to help focus the HUD's image. There is no coating involved. It sounds though that most people are happy with the image either way.
