I recently had my 99 coupe serviced and got it back with an exhaust flange leak between the muffler flange and exhaust pipe flange. Seem the exhaust pipe that was welded onto the flange was defective in the welding and completely came apart. Currently, waiting for the dealer to let me know if this is under warranty since I feel it's a defective part. Anyone have any similiar problems?
I had the exact same problem on my 99 at 34000 mi. Remind your dealer that this (the "H" pipe assembly) is part of the emissions system (includes the catalytic converters), and your 8 yr emissions warranty should cover it. Be firm, the new part costs about $1,200. If they won't cover it, take it to a good welding shop and have it rewelded. Good luck.
This has been a reoccurring theme around here as our cars get more miles on them. Make friends with your service guy. If that does not get your parts replaced, beat him up and take his girl friend.
Seroiusly, a muffler shop can easily weld the flange back on at little to no cause if all else fails.
This just happened to my 99 Coupe with 59,000 miles. I currently have the extended warranty and while making my appointment the service rep said it may not be covered. Please let me know how it goes for you.
Well I got bad news from my dealer Bob Stall Chev in La Mesa, Ca.
They said my extended warranty does not cover my exhaust problem and referred me to the GM rep who said it was only a $30 fix and that they couldn't help. Funny thing when I went to have it fixed there was another Corvette from Bob Stall in the shop having the same problem, I really think this is a defective part in that the welds are not properly done and after some time eventually break apart. GM just doesn't want to admit they have a problem with the exhaust welds.

If the flange is on the muffler pipe side, the emission warranty doesn't cover it. You'd be better off going to a muffler shop and having them weld it. I had both mine welded for $50. Or replace with aftermarket exhaust.
If it's the H-pipe side, emission warranty should cover it. I think it's only 5yr/60k mile coverage though.
The flange was on the H pipe side, not the muffler side. It was still not covered under warranty, but emissions coverage according to GM is for 80K miles. It cost me $65 for both flanges to be welded.
Had the infamous leak as well..at the flange.. GM simply does not want to own up to this obvious manufacturer's defect. After 36 you are on your own.. I used JB weld with great succes. If it gets loose again it takes only 5 minutes to repair.
Just replaced mine last Sunday at 40K miles. Passenger's side was completely broken, driver's side had crack. Dealer said it wasn't covered under the extended warranty. Fortunately a guy in the car club was selling his '03 stock exhaust for $75 so it was an easy decision.
GM has a defective weld that they refuse to admit. (surprise, surprise)
Here's a pic of the driver's side weld that came lose on my car.
As you can see, the weld did NOT break. It simply was a bad weld that did not stick to the flange. I wonder how many more bad welds we have on our cars?
kinda looks like some of my welds when i put on my stainless works headers:lolg: :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: :lolg: mine have lasted about a 1000 miles so far
