My 99 hs developed a noise in the rear of the car. It sounds like a wine and is speed sensitive, just starting out you cannot hear it but as speed increases is gets louder. With my pour hearing I have not been able to determine if it is from one side or the other or possibly the middle. I have checked the wheel bearings for play and they seem fine. I have also check the rear end fluid level and that is also good.
Has anyone had this problem? Does anhone have any suggestions or ideas what the problem might be?
Check the tires ..... my mechanic told me my whine might be the tires ... as they wear unevenly they create noise. I have posted a questions similar to yours to see what other owners say before I spend $1400 on tires.
I have a horrible whining noise in my rear---and I just had it fixed under warranty in January! It returned in a few months. In January they rebuilt my rear end (it had been leaking lubricant and had burned up). They also replaced the input shaft into my transmission because it was "worn". Indeed, when I got the car back it was as silent as stock. But one week later my rebuilt rear grenaded at the drag strip and I had it rebuilt again. Then I later had it replaced with a 3.90. But the whine is back. Only at speeds over about 30 mph I think. Funny thing is, if I coast, it gets quieter...but if I lightly tap the gas, the noise resumes full volume.
I had resigned myself just to live with it but if someone here has a solution (ABS unit- good idea, I'll have that checked) I might try to get it fixed.
One note: my car makes the noise even when it's on the lift...it isn't tire noise.
I took my car to the dealership today and they thought it was the rear differential though they said they couldn't be certain it wasn't the transmission. Since I had an aftermarket rear-diff installed in May, I'll have to go to the shop that did that to have them prove to me it isn't the rear diff. If it's not the rear diff, the tranny should be under warranty.
I just hope I can get it fixed before something goes way-bad. It has gotten very loud the last week or so (much more so than in the past).
Sorry to hear it bro, I have been there and done that, I had to get new gears, the chevy house will tell you as soon as you get there, Hope you had an extended warranty, mine paid for itself when that happend. Good luck.. :(
My 3:15's have always had a whine at crusie and slight throttle at 53 - 77 mph(goes away when you let off the gas). Since the rear was out of another car, I can't get Chevrolet to warranty it (I still have the 2.73's for backup). If our cars had a little sound insulation, we probably wouldn't hear the noise, but it doesn't take much noise to hear it. The Goodyear runcraps help drown out a lot of the noise. I hate to get rid of them, cause I know the noise will really be bad then. :smash:
After I owned my 99 FRC for 2yrs & 10months and I started to get a whine begining at 40mph and above, and only on acceleration and not on decelleration. Car hot and cold. No oil leakage. About 28,000 miles on the car. Fortunately it was replaced as a complete unit under warranty and no problems since. This was all done before my TT package which might have mitigated the warranty coverage. Seems like our C-5 rears are vulnerable to leaks and whines. Good Luck
My problem turned out to be my rear differential (again). The current rear is a set of 3.90s that I had installed in late May 2003. They will be replaced under warranty by my tuner (MTI). So good deal for me as that won't cost me a penny :)
