The first thing you should do is take the mirror itself off. It is held together by a few clips that just snap on and off. Inside the mirror unit is a heavy duty spring that holds the head unit in place on the neck of the mirror assembly. If the clip holding down the spring has come off, and there no tension on the spring then you've found the problem. Unfortunately, I have never heard of anyone being able to put that clip back on to the spring, which means you'll have to replace the mirror completely. Or you can do what I did and drill a hole between the mirror head unit and the neck and and put a bolt in place. It's a temporary fix, but it works for time being. Hope that helps.
If I am not mistaken I recently saw a post where a guy is doing the mirror fix for about $65. You send him your mirror and the turn around is about 5 days. Sure beats having to replace and paint a new one ($400 plus). I am sorry I dont have a link right now as I am on my way out...try a search.
Hi all,
Matthew, I did the same thing as the previous poster(drilled the screw through housing and base) after the SECOND time it broke. Isn't it an ingenious design........a breakaway mirror that literally BREAKS when it is touched! What's the point of a breakaway mirror? I too remember a post about a member offering an orig fix to it for about $65.
I've kept this handy just in case I need it someday, hope you find it helpful :)

Re: Someone please help (MatthewC)
I just submitted a new TechTip on how to fix it with a screw. It hasn't shown up yet in the TechTip list. There are detailed instructions and pics to show you what to do. You might ask a moderator to find it for you or list it permanently.
