First off, hello guys. I've been an avid reader for about 6 months now. I am just about to finalize a deal on trading my 1996 Impala SS in on a 02 Electron blue Z06 :steering: I was wondering what you guys would all do first to this beast. Skip-shift is a must for me, seeing as how I'm new to the whole 6 speed scene. I was thinking maybe a 75 shot with a low fuel pressure shut off switch, rpm window switch and spark retard box. Are there any real issues I should think about correcting that you current Z06 owners know about? My father has an 03 Black Z06 and my step mother has a 00 white coupe. As soon as we tear into the mods we'll start really posting and getting to know some of you. We are avid posters on the ImpalaSSforum and I hope you guys have more knowledge to share with us. Thanks again
Re: First things to do to a 02 ZO6? (waytofastvette)
I went with a Blackwing Filter and FLP headers. I feel that these two mods are a good starting point for any project monster. Welcome to the forum
Intake, gears, and then decide if you want H/c or supercharger - JMTC - our engines already make power in the high part of the powerband - think about a Magasun (SP) Roots type blower - on a Z with 3.73 gears and the M SC - you'll poopie your pants the first time you take it out :D :D :D
By the way, welcome to the "club" Impala SS's are nice - but you are in a whole new class of performance now! Enjoy!
Yeah, I'm definetly thinking shifter. Where's the best place to buy gears? 4.10's seem like they'd be ok, especially around town. The six speed is absolutely ridiculous compared to my Impala. I put a TH-400 into my Impala with a 3200 stall. This car puts it to absolute shame. Kinda sad when you think about it :mad and to think I paid for that car for so long, I could have been driving one of these!
Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I can start learning and giving advice rather than taking it :D
Why would you put 4:10's in a Z06? The MN12 gearing with 3:42's is = to a MN6 with 3:90's. The 4:10's would be close to a 5:00 gear in a MN12 equiped car.
My 2003 Z06 has exhaust.... intake... and a shifter... had the car for ~ 2 weeks. Next mod may be 1.85 rockers... and a dyno tune.
That alone should put it in the high 11's with drag tires....
Take it to some tracks and autocrosses and run it for a while. Then make your changes. Once you get a few hours of WOT driving on it it will feel stronger.
