There was no speedo change needed for the 6 speed cars. The autos need to have an LS Edit job done I think. I went 70 mph today and it's about 1800 RPM. It used to be about 1500. It's the best of both worlds; the 4.10 gears put the power band right there for you at street speeds and the overdrive lets you cruise virtually the same as the stockers. It's a real nice mod.
George :)
You'll have to do some playing with the numbers and have some starting data and play abit. The 6 speed and the auto 4 would have different rear ratios to be equal on the over drive gears. If your gonna do any 1/4 miles.... make sure you don't run out of gear buy the end of the 1/4. It's a bummer to have to shift just before the finish... and lose the shift time. Also Z06 and non... have different redline limits.
thnx for the link... looks like 4.10s are safe. I was thinking it might be overkill and would loose the top end MPH. But I guess its still good for >200mph if you got the HP. heh.
in sixth gear, 5500 rpm would be good for about 212mph :-)
heck, with a 4.56, you'ld still be able to hit >200mph with 6th gear. I wonder if anyone has run 4.50s on the street?? talk about kick in the butt!
Glad the link helped. Here's the next step... You calculated your top end... now calculate this. With a given set of rear gear and the ratio of first gear... what wil be your MPH at redline? Next... at that MPH what RPM will you enter 2nd gear at? Next at what MPH will you be shifting into 3rd?
As you raise you rear differential gear you will have a smaller MPH range in each gear..... shorter time between shifts. What gear, RPM, and MPH will you be at in the 1/4 mile?
I sell and install 4.10 diffs 3:1 over 3.90 or 3.73. It's definately the best gear for an MN6. 3.90 is great for trhe Z06.
I think an MN6 and 4.10 is much better than a Z06 trans. THe gear spacing is absolutely perfect.
I've never had anyone think they went too low.
Guys, I have NOT re-geared my Corvette (99 Vert).
BUT, I do have a Dakota R/T 5.9 Puckup also. 2WD Dakota with a 360ci, regular truck engine. It has 3.90 gears (all R/T Dakotas do). That thing RIPS from stop lights, no kidding. Not as fast as a Corvette, but close, gives the Mustang guys fits. Spins the tires real easy.
Not much top end, but down low - WOW.
Regular turck + low gears = FUN, FUN.
Same for Corvettes !!!
Corvette + low gears = FUN, FUN & more FUN
ART
One must choose their ratio carefully, though, based on the future mod path planned and the owner's style of driving. :yesnod:
Could someone elaborate on this a bit further.
If you go with too low a gear on a big-bore, tt, s/c or some combo of high-hp setup, your're going to exceed the available traction and just smoke the tires at anything other than feathered-throttle gear changes.
A lot of cams shift the powerband up so it's easy to modulate the throttle to avoid wheelspin. My h/c combo mates well with the 4.10's which you can see if you look at the dynograph.
