I am itching to do my next mod to the car,.... this is too addicting.
With all the different head cam packages out there and AFR coming out with a set soon and the Fast intake being released soon.... I have decided to wait on the top end of the motor.
SO - should i get LGM headers and Off Road Pipe or go with a 4.10 rear from east coast with the hardened shafts?
My assumptions are they both will give me similar "feel" from a SOTP perspective and hopefully lead me into the low 12's if not break the high 11's (Wishful Thinking).
I did perform a search but saw very mixed responses...
Sounds like you're gonna stay N/A and IMO you're gonna' need both headers and gears eventually when you go h/c so it's really just up to you what order you want to do them in. I agree with you in doing both those choices before h/c because you'll be able to enjoy the real and sotp benefits of each immediately.
I say go with the gears since ECS is running a gp now. :yesnod:

Re: What Mod should i do next???? (99firetruck)
I don't want to tell you how to spend your money, BUT, go for the gears. Give Chris and Doug a call at ECS. They will discuss what your goal is, and which gear set is best for you.
In the mean time......you will get instant gradification from just the gears. I have a 6-speed, 98 coupe with 4:10's and it made the car so much fun to drive. Now it feels like a sports car, rather than just mere transportation.
Unfortunatly i am the type of person who value's others opinions and knowledge... Usually i just jump into things and ask questions later but i am quite cautious with this car (I guess because the amount of $$ the parts are).
I am personally leaning twards the gears myself.. I am getting tired of the 5th and 6th game where i am at 1200 at like 60-65 in 6th... Rather be a bit higher even if it means less mpg. Car just feels better at 2g
I have been reading the different arguments regarding the 3.90's vs 4.10's and to be honest with you - as much as i would love to get my car pullin 125's in the 1/4... for my daily driver and all, realistically i dont think i will be putting that much money into a car that i am putting 20k+ miles a year on...
I believe i spoke with chris (may have been doug) last week regarding a pro charger... That is why i am looking to do the exhaust/gears to get one more thing out of the way :-)
If your considering a s/c, Chris, I'm sure, will steer you to a higher gear - possibly a 3.73 or 3.90 at most.
Gears will definitely put you in the beefier part of the power band. The first time I drove mine with the 4.10's, I immediately knew it was just right for me.
Talk to tuners and they'll steer you to the right setup. :yesnod:
with 99firetruck's current mods, would the sotp feel be the same whether he went with the gears or the headers? or, would the gears give a more noticeable sotp feel?
i'll be making the same decision sometime in the distant future and i'm really curious. i'm a big fan of the sotp feel, especially since most of my driving is below 55 miles per hour.
Of all the mods I've done, I have to say that my 4.10 gears gave me the most as far as sotp. Both heads/cam and headers gave me good gains (405rwhp) but gears did the most to change the feel of pure grunt during acceleration.
I did gears after h/c but I'd do gears first if I were to do it over again. For around-town-under-55 kind of driving, gears are probably your most fun improvement. Your choice of ratio is based on future mods and driving style/preference.

Go for the gears. If most of your driving is around 55-60 mph, you will really appreciate the gears. Every gear is a new experience. My car seemed to "lug" in all gears before the change. It's really great around town, back country roads, or along twisting mountain roads. ....AND.....In 6th. gear at 2000 RPM I'm crusing at 75 mph. BEST MOD FOR THE MONEY

Re: What Mod should i do next???? (vette#one)
I don't have the gears in mine, so I can't say one way or the other about them. I vote for the headers. I added LTs and off road pipe to mine and it made an amazing difference. Of course, I already had the s/c on it. I think I would get more SOTP feel if I could just hold traction :D . Anything over 1/2 throttle breaks them loose in the first two gears :reddevil The runcraps have got to go.
Both of these mods would fit well with the s/c, however.
The gears hands down - you'll get a real SOTP improvement regardless of other mods. You won't feel that much with headers alone (they'll come alive with heads and cam).
Personally, I'd go with the LGM headers. Granted, you'll need gears .But, you'll need to increase flow through the motor and headers are needed. Get the LGM with merge collectors if within the budget.
As you can see in my sig....I need 410s. :yesnod: :D
I think i have decided on gears for the following reason:
When i do the headers, i would also like to do an ls6 or fast intake at the same time and also have the car tuned with ls1edit - those two additional items will run me an additional grand or so.
I figure i can get the gears now - save up over the winter and come early spring i can do the headers and intake (by then the intake wars should hopefully be over) :)
I see Cartek is a bit further away from me then i originally thought so i may just order the rear from Eastcoast and install it myself. (Can't be that hard - right?)
Your gonna get the biggest SOTP gains from the gears, once you've got a little money set aside maybe you can do headers and heads at the same time for an even bigger boost.

i'd love to see a "tech tip" or "how to" on installing a rear on a c5 (complete with pics). if you end up doing it yourself, post some pictures. :D :D :D

Give East Cost Supercharging a call..........they can do the rear for you while you wait.....they usually get there around 10:00 am, so that will give you time to drive up. By the end of the afternoon, you'll be going home with one hell of a smile on your face (609) 752-0321
