in a previous post i described a pre-ignition-pinging, very minor, under slight accelleration. the knock sensor would catch the ping and retard the ignition, but it was audible for a moment. after investigation of it seems that the pinging is temp related, anything over 198 degrees, i get the pinging, below it runs beautiful...i know, i know run under 198degrees.....anyway what are your thoughts, bad t-stat? i am not sure the fans are turning on, what does you engines run at?
the car, a 1998 LS-1, A4 coupe with 30K miles.
This sometimes happens with low octane gas or when we get some "bad" gas. Get the highest octane you can at your next fill-up. You might want to add a can of injector cleaner too. It could, of course, be many other things, but this is worth a try. :yesnod: :)

Re: freekin pinging!!!!! (dsky)
That may be something that's been fixed in later models? I had that problem in really hot ambient temps (whether or not engine temp was high) with my 99 but my 03 didn't do it at least this summer. Bad gas? Who knows what's coming out of the pumps these days... :seeya
whta's the octane rating for premium in Florida? If it is 91 like it is here in California, high temps and low octane premium can produce pinging. Your thermostat and fans are fine, the fans just don't kick on until about 220 degrees or so. For grins, turn on your AC and you will hear the fans kick on.
Not much you can do unless you retard your timing , lower the temps or use a couple of gallons per tank of toluene or Xylene or race gas.
Just so you all know...
If you can hear the ping it is very bad, most detonation is not loud enough to hear. So if can hear your car ping I would find out what is causing it ASAP
I agree. I have had no pinging at 105deg ambient even with "bad" California gas.
Could also be bad plugs, plug wires, or carbon build up.
Still, injector cleaner is a good first start, but sounds like you will need a more thorough investigation.
I was advised by a good dyno tuner to only run premium gas from certain companies namely - Mobil, BP and Citgo. I have followed this advice and notice a decrease in pinging [pre-ignition]. I used to run the cheapest premium I could find but then the tuner also asked the question - "why do you need to run the cheapest gas you can find in your $50,000 car?" Now I don't worry about the price of gas - just the quality.
I have been through all of this, tried various remedies, and GOT RID OF IT, but, now it is back also. The cleaner that GM sells is the best start, I can't remember eactly what it is called but is something" 23458", the parts guy will know what you are talking about.
Beyond that, I know that Citgo Premium (93) is by far the best, but, there is always the unscrupulous gas station that will dump regular unleaded into the Premium tank for the extra profit. I have confirmed it happens (from an ex delivery driver). Although I have made waves, I have not been able to get anyone to admit to it. The station blames the delivery company. The delivery company claims no knoweledge of it. Most consumers don't know the difference because they don't have cars that really need it. I hope as a group we can stop this theft by confronting the managers and regional managers of the gas stations we use.
It is very simple logic that if your vette hauls butt with no ping, you pull into the station and fill up (I almost always wait until the DIC tells me it is 70 miles and out) and when you pull out and accelerate hard the ping is back, you have been shanked!
I had the same problem with my 99 hardtop at about 45k miles. It was definitely heat related. High temps in the summer just did a number on that car. Had it checked out a number of times w/o a real fix rendered. It got to the point where I couldn't even run the AC w/o that nasty pinging sounding off.. :mad It was Embarrasing ...your nice pristine Vette sounding like a old beater ready for the junkyard.
I finally fixed the problem though......... I got a new Vette in 02! Suddenly all my overheating problems went away ! :yesnod:

I have a 99 with 33k miles... no pinging except with Hypertech Power Tuning!! Even using 93-octane stuff (Shell Optimax 98RON in the UK), it still pings. That thing needs damn rocket fuel it uses such aggressive timing!!! :banghead:
93 octane, i even put some 104 boost in there, no dif.....
The MMT in the octane boosters is not good for your plugs. You may want to check out your plugs while you are working out the other issues. New plugs may work wonders for you.

I just got my car back (also a 98) from the shop that went in for a pinging sound, Everyone I talked to said it sounded like engine ping, WRONG :mad . A starter motor and flywheel later the car is fixed, no more knocking or pinging.
