Went to Englishtown today for East Coast Superchargers Corvette Challenge. I left after the burnout contest, got in my car turned on the ignition and the message was on my DIC. I started the car and the wheel was NOT locked but the message stayed there until I cleared it. I then shut it down and restarted and the message reappeared. I reset the DIC and drove home without any problem. Shut it down and restarted and the message is there. I have a CLB coming from LS1HowTo.com and am going to install it. Can someone tell me what is going on here? I am the second owner and the dealer doesn't know much about the car. But I don't think it was taken in for the recall, because that would have been on the service records. It is a 99 FRC M6. Any help would be appreciated.
I would just instal the bypass and see what happens. thsi has happened to two out of three C5's that i have owned. Just get it fixed now before it actually locks up. kaley
I agree, you should just install the bypass since your car is out of warranty. On the off chance though that you have had the warranty fix, this could be an early sign of a battery dying. I just discovered this last week when I changed batteries. The car had been starting harder than normal and was getting progressively worse.
I had the warranty CL fix applied about a year ago and it worked fine for several months. About eight months ago I started getting a service column lock message again. The column would never lock however. I lived with this, clearing the message every time I started the car until this week when I changed the battery and everything started funtioning correctly again. Now I get no message and the column locks and unlocks fine. BTW it also cured my hard starts.
Thanks kayley and texasplantman. You've answered my question. Texas, I think have the issue you had. My battery is probably the original. New battery coming this week, AFTER CLB install. Thanks guys.
Absolutly get the bypass! It will lock up totally. It happened to me when the car was moving down the road! I talked to GM and they said there was nothing they could do about it. I responded by saying that had I crashed and killed someone they would for sure be involved in the lawsuite! Mine started like yours and got worse.
According to the directions the bypass will not work on a locked wheel. I would seriously not touch it, don't start it and wait for the bypass and install. I just did it Sat and it's a breeze. If you do lock it you can unlock it by seriously wrestling with the wheel back and forth to the point where you look like an insane person and it often unlocks. Check C5 tech section and you'll see what I mean.
For Automatice cars the fix is for the dealer to simply disengage the column lock and it will not reoccur. In MN6 cars that cannot be done and it's happened to my car twice....once with a former owner which was document in service records and once with me about a month ago.
