C5 Rear Suspension Problem
99 coupe, 3500 miles, Bilstein shocks, T1 stabilizers. This car has a wide body kit. The rear fenders turn in about 3". There is normally, 3" clear between the top of the tire and the fender. Under certain conditions. if I hit a dip in the road at highway speeds, the tire gets into the fender. Made a real mess! THE QUESTION: When this happens, the clearance between the tire and fender becomes less than 2"! Over time it will raise back up or if I jack the car up and let it down it goes back to normal height. Billstein says the shocks couldn't do this and no one has yet to figure it out. I'm thinking the spring may be defective or fractured somehow. I had an inch cut off the fender but still have the problem. Anyone have a clue how the height of the car can change like this???????? Thank you for any assistance.

If you jack the car up and let it back down, it is at an ABNORMALLY high height, so that is not the "normal" height. If that is the hieght you want normally, you need to crank on the bolts going through the springs and raise the car up.

Thank you JMX. That's the best explanation so far. I had the car in two shops and both told me there was no way to lower the car! I even pointed out the bolts. I'll try it myself.
