belt squel?
I have a squeling sound coming from what seems to be the drive belt when I accelerate. It does not do it at idle but when I am rolling it gets steadily louder as I increase pedal pressure.
Why would it only happen when I am moving if it was the belt?
Could it be the idler pulley?
Has anyone had this problem? and if so how did you fix it?
i had similiar problem, changed both belts and squeal went away. it might be coming back. some peeps have bought gatorback belts. i believe mine is the pulley on the a/c compressor. not sure if this helps.......
I had a problem with mine squeaking at idle mostly. I took both belts off and turned everything feeling for what might have been a bad bearing or something of the sort. I couldn't find anything so I replaced both belts with gatorback's and it's been quiet since then.
buy new belts, and a can of brake kleen........ spray the pullies with the brake kleen, let it dry, then put on the new belts. worked for me after i did my pully swap (went through 3 belts I did this)
how much are gatorbacks compared to stock? can you get them anywhere or only at dealer?
$27 compared to the GM Dayco at $55. The gatorback is the way to go. I purchases 2 dayco belts and all new pulleys trying to get rid of a squeek and after I put a Goodyear gatorback on the squeek was gone. Nuff said.
You have to order it from Autozone. They will probably say they can't get it but keep on them. You need to find someone that knows what they are doing behind the counter. Someone said on the forum that you have to get them to look it up for a 97-98 model????
got the gator belt, a/c small one. picking up other serpentine (98) model belt tomorrow. got my brake kleen. hopefully it works. other belts lasted 500 miles and started squeaking. :(
I've had belt squeal, and used break clean on them to quiet them, only to find out later that it was my water pump and|or a/c compressor going out. The pulley wheel on these items were ceasing up slowly over time, causing the belts to drag and not grip. Just something to watch out for.

Re: belt squel? (vectorz)
I switched to the gatorback main drive belt and the belt is still squealing like hell :mad I swear it seems like it could be my tensioner pulley. This is going to be a long and drawn out deal I think. Autozone carries a smaller, narrower belt that they list for vettes with AC. I can not find where this belt would go?? The car only uses one belt right? I did not spray with brake clean so I will try that.
Also wanted to know if anyone knows what the tick marks on the top of the idler pulley means? Is there a way to adjust the tensioner? Thanks
i have a 2000 and takes 2 belts. one big serpentine belt and the a/c belt. changed both and currently my squeal is gone. will keep an eye on the tension for the a/c as thats manual.

I have a 2000 also and only have one belt. Where does the other one go  Man I may have a serious problem here. Do you have to get under the car to see the AC belt? Please let me know ASAP, Thanks

I do not have the manual, bought it used and it didnt have one. I need to get one. Thank you very much for sending me the pic. I am going to look for that belt now. Do you have to look from under the car to see it? Thanks again
