I took it apart and found that is held together with what looks like a valve spring and retainer.
How the heck do I compress the spring to get the retainer to snap back on?
Its broken for good. The clip is not strong enough to hold the spring back once it snaps. A new one will cost $250 plus painting so the best option besides screwing it together perminately is to call this guy in Ohio.
He'll fax you instructions on how to take apart the mirror. Ship it to him with $60 and he will fix it and send it back. Many members have done it, he guarantees it not to break again. I just had mine done two weeks ago and its as good as new.
