Default Exhaust System - General Help

I just got my new 02 Coupe and looking for exhaust improvments. I want a good sound but do not want my neighbors to hate me. Also my car already has an H-Pipe, will an X-Pipe be worth the trouble --- any advise. :auto:

You'll get as many answers as their are members! Highly subjective.

I like the stock Z06. and fortunately for some of us there are members who don't. Hence, they take off a nearly $2700 (GM retail) titanium system, sell them cheap (typically about $500 here on the Forum), and put on noisier systems to fit their wishes.

Bottom line, you better listen to various ones first-hand, if you can, to decide. The later version H-pipe and X-pipes are much the same in this regard. Yous pays yer money and takes yous pick!

All the best. :yesnod:

I hope you have some time on your hands because here is the granddaddy of all exhaust posts:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=621119

You'll notice that Borla trounces them all. Here's why I think this is so:

1. Borla's name is very well known.
2. They shocked the industry when they came out with a $400 stainless steel cat-back system (million mile warranty) that had (and has) a deep rumble (as in 60s sound) and a half 60s thunder and half Ferarri wail at WOT.
3. They then rocked the house again with 4-tip systems for $600 that were still hundreds of dollars below their closest competitors.
4. Others have tried to produce a better sound, but to many forum members, have failed.

I came to the conclusion that I really don't need a brilliant, mirror-finish exhaust system under my car. It tends to draw attention away from the smooth lines of the car and to the lower back end. Of course, the extra $400 I saved can be use elsewhere - like for a Valentine 1 or Hurst, or intake.......

Did you guess that I bought the Borlas?

BTW, an X-pipe reduces the pop-pop you often hear with cat-backs upon deceleration. Some say that an X-pipe also reduces any resonance. I think that the popping sound is music to my ears.

Listen to a bunch of them.

Then go with B+B Prt's. Quit enough at idle and a great sound at full throttle.
I do run a Magnaflow X-pipe and I love it. Deep sound. :D

My .02 is get to an event listen to some cars before you decide, that's what I did.

Brian
P.S.
You might want to do a search as well.

Welcome to the Forum! I just put on the Borla Stingers (quad tip Ovals) and like the sound. I have an A4, and find I don't need an X-pipe. Great idle and plenty of growl at wot.

:iagree: with Avanti - The Z06 Ti system is a subtle improvement, and saves weight to boot. But if you want LOUD, this ain't it - I would say they're roughly equivalent to the Corsa Touring I had on my last coupe.

As Avanti said, $500 seems to be the going rate for a good set of take-offs.

CORSA's are the best system on the market. Quiet under normal driving and meaner than a Junk Yard dog at WOT. I have the Indy's and I've been told over & over again that that's the baddest exhaust system they've heard on a corvette. :iagree:  I do have the X-pipe and it makes the system sound even sweeter.

Thanks for all your help - another related question. Most exhaust systems adverise cat-back, yet it looks like they just go over the axle and not all the way back to the Catalytic Converter. Will the cat-back go all the way back and replace the H-pipe???

Also will the Borla Stingers set off car alarms?

I went with Corsa Indy's with the Tiger Shark tips, love the sound and the different look. On the Tiger shark tips the four tips are grouped together in the center instead of spread out two on each side.

Its 100% personal preference. You have to like the look of the tips and the sound of the exhaust. The Borlas are not LOUD they are louder than stock and sound like horsepower.

My Choice: Four tip oval Borla Stingers, but, I sure do like the BB Bullets.

Just wait till you ask about which headers to buy....

No, cat-backs do not replace the H-pipe. I've had my Stingers now for many months and have never set off a car alarm. They're not nearly as loud as the old glass-packs on a 60s GTO, that's for sure. I'd say that they are perfect - won't wake the neighbors, yet always let you know you have a V-8 under the hood.
