Default Why the H-pipe?

To most of you, this will probably seem quite remedial, but that's ok...

I was pondering this question the other day. Before owning my Vette, I had cars with dual exhaust -- and they were true "dual" exhaust with no crossover, H-pipe, or X-pipe. And they sounded sweet.

So, my question is this: Why are Vette exhausts joined? What is the point? Is it to reduce backpressure? And if so, why didn't older 'muscle cars' use this technique?

Help me out on this.

Most people with older cars will have an x/h pipe installed when updating the systems.

From my understanding of it.....

The x/h pipe helps equalize the pressure on both sides of the exhaust which causes a sort of vaccum to assist with excavating the exhaust fumes from the cylinders on either side.. (I think) and i belive the larger the xpipe (to a point) the better the flow/equalization to either side.

I may be wrong or slightly off - but that is my understanding of it.

A Chevy V8 has an LRLLRLRR engine firing order. So the exhaust on one side goes L-LL-L-- while the other side goes -R--R-RR. This is what gives these engines the burble. An H-pipe allows the pulses to use both sides of the exhaust and mellows the tome. An X-pipe is a more efficient version of the H-pipe.

I owned several 69 Dodge Chargers and Super Bees as well as a '70Hemi 'Cuda.

They all had a crossover in the factory dual exhaust, midway down, and I'm sure it had a purpose.

There's my $.02

When I built up my 82 Mustang GT 20 years ago, one of the first pieces I ordered from the Motorsport catalog was the exhaust system with crossover pipe. So they were hip to it back then for sure.

Of course, all my buddies at the time couldn't figure it out, since the prevailing wisdom was that duals all the way back were the way to go.

Science has a lot of enemies in the motor world. Hence the proliferation of potato-peeler wings and go-fast-stickers. :D

it's used to equalize scavenging of the exhaust .... its much more effecient..
BTW.. this is a true duel exhaust.,... its just the 21 century version..... as technology grows... so does our Cars.... C1 , C2, and C3 cars were lucky to get 15 mpg..... The C5 can get over 30 mpg...

Ok, got it.

Thanks, y'all!!

(I'll only be a Southerner for another 60 days, so I have to get the y'all out of my system)

PS Sorry, I meant "duals all the way back" as opposed to "true"...
