CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!!
I put a Granatelli cold air intake on my 01 vert and I feel the motor surging when i let of the gas or when I am cruising between 50 and 60 mph.I have put about 60 miles on the car since install. Is this normal?Does the computer have to relearn and readjust for the extra air?Or is this normal? No check engine lights are on.My wife also noticed it and she did't know I had changed the intake. Please help. Thanks
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (Southview)
I know this isn't going to help, but when I installed my Blackwing I had to do nothing. However, I have read some posts where some say you have to drive for a few miles for the computer to relearn. I'm sure othere will chime in on this. Good luck
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (Southview)
I have read on this forum it does take some time for the Vette's computer to adjust to changes in the intake or exhaust. In the past week I changed my exhaust and have found no difference in runnability but it's a whole hell of a lot louder :)
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (Southview)
I have a new air intake system (twin cone filters) on order. I've already been told to expect some "rough" idle or less than smooth acceleration until the computer learns the new air flow capabilities of the new intake. Should not take all that many miles. I'll post any problems I encounter. :chevy
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (Southview)
I installed a twin cone air filter system with a new air bridge and smooth coupler on a 2000 vert several weeks ago. I did not notice any change in performance. That's OK because I did it for the look. A few extra HP would be a bonus. I did not get any messages on the DIC nor did I feel any surging sensation.
I have been told that the computer does relearn after a few hundred miles.

Make sure you don't have any air leaks from a coupler or loose connection. This could cause the surge problem.
:iagree: A loose connection somewhere is often the culprit. I've used cold air intakes and now a Blackwing and found, at least in my case, that the computer will adjust rather quickly to the change in airflow without surging if all is snug. Both of my FRCs pepped up pretty quickly in the first fifty miles or so. :yesnod:

:iagree: Mine was loose for a while, and eventually "popped" off one day when I went over some train tracks! Triple check to make sure everything is snug especially in the underside of the tube-the area you can't really see.
Also it probably would be best to do an idle relearn procedure. It's pretty easy and will make sure everything is

You prbably forgot to put one of the vaccum lines back in, its a small one and you need to poke a hole in the coupler and stich the hose in there, it should smooth you out.
where did you get it from E-bay?
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (Monster231)
Yeah,I got it on ebay.I drove the car about 100 miles today and it seems to studder when decalerating.I haven't had the car that long but I don't remember feeling it before.Takes off great and after about 30 min of driving it ran smooth, just has the problem when letting off the gas to slow down.Checked all clamps and everything seems to be on tight.I know why do I want to slow down? :lolg:
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (jschindler)
From my limited experience, you should have no ill effects from installing one of the aftermarket intakes......... especially a rougher idle or surging.
If you have any leak..... even a small one and are sucking in un-metered air, you will get the problem(s) that you are describing. Air leaks after the MAF are the culprits. You kinda need to pull the entire system off........ bench-check the fit of each individual piece....... and then install on the car. The rubber, plastic and metal parts should fit tightly and really not need a clamp to seal properly.... but do use the clamps to keep everything snug. A small and very, very thin layer of silicone grease can help rubber parts slide without bunching up.
Also as somebody above stated, an overoiled air filter will cause problems with the MAF sensor wires. Those need to be clean and dry.
Re: CAR SURGING AFTER COLD AIR INTAKE INSTALLED!!!!!!!! (TexasRedZ06)
Mine had an idle surge, right after installing a K&N and ZO6 lid, did the idle relearn, removing and reinstalling fuses 16 and 23. Cured the problem immediately. It seems these cars all react differently to cold air installs...
