I just bought this 2000 with 41,000 miles on it. When you first start it, it sounds like a ticking lifter but I can't tell for sure. After driving it for awhile, the noise dissipates somewhat. I haven't tried changing the oil yet but I suspect that won't make much difference. The frequency of the ticking is about right for a lifter but I can't tell which bank its coming from. Any thoughts? If it is a lifter or associated mechanics i.e. rod, valve, are there any parameters in Autotap that could detect something out of wack?
BTW, did a search and couldn't find much on it.
I hate to say it, but it may be piston slap. At least by your description is seems to fit. My 02 has a similar noise when started. I have been using some carbon clean to see if it will help and it has to a large degree been beneficial. GM part # for the cleaner is 12345515. Use it one bottle per tank for a few tanks and see if it helps. Best price I have found is GM Parts Direct.
:iagree:
My '01 has a mildly noticeable similar noise. My wife's '00 has it but louder. Several of the used cars that I test drove when looking for my wife's car had it. If you do a search you will find threads that discuss piston slap. Apparently a chronic problem of many C5s.
is this noise noticable from the drivers seat or only when the hood is up?
may only be the injectors. piston knock is much slower and deeper sounding than lifter noise.
there were some rocker issues-needle bearing fragments would be found in the oil.
Its a ticking noise that can be heard about anywhere outside of the car. It eventually subsides after running for awhile. I'll do a search on the piston slap issue. Thanks!
I would also try the carbon cleaner, I know it helped mine a lot. It was recommended to me by a C5 service tech. I am now on my second tank and yesterday's cold start, after three weeks of no use, was noticably quieter.
Well here's a kicker. After sitting all night and all day today, I hopped in 'er this evening and fired 'er up. No ticking. Drove it to a store about 4 miles away, shut it down, went into the store, came back out and fired 'er up after sitting 10 minutes and the ticking came back. Revved it up a couple of times while sitting still and it went away for the most part. Came back home and the ticking stayed gone. :skep: After reading about the piston slap syndrome on previous threads, I'm wondering if I just have a stubborn lifter. I don't know. Anyway, I'm all for the cheapest route. What is the additive to the fuel that GM recommended for the carbonized piston theory?
I'll bet it is a lifter, mine does the exact same thing on certain warm starts. It seems to go away if you run a little thicker oil. It is really nothing to worry about.

Thanks! Will-do. I'm going to slap in some of this stuff. I don't think this is as big of an issue as I originally thought but I was wanting to put my NX nitrous system back on this one (100 shot) and I didn't want to compound a real pending problem by shooting the juice to it!
My 01 had the same noise. I had the short shaft seal replaced and took the car out for some "spirited" runs (120+mph) and I noticed that the noise was gone!! So, I am of the opinion that it is carbon buildup that causes it. :D :D
I believe what he meant is that he had some work done on the short shaft
(I'm assuming the rear axle) and when he took it out for a few high speed
runs, he noticed the ticking was gone indicating the cause was carbon buildup.

And you can get a 4 pack of Techron at COSTCO for under $10.
My 2001 ticked in various degrees for 14,000 miles. I'm putting on
GHL exhaust so I won't hear it. :D
