While I am likely not he best to answer, when engines are referred to as long block, it means you are buying an engine complete with all the accessories attached. A short block is just the engine thus it is shorter than the long block.

Big Block vs Small Block refers to the size of the block of the engine. Bigger usually means more cubic inches but it is possible to build up a small black to have as many cubes as some small blocks but then you can build up the big blocks even bigger. Big Block is referred to as a "Rat" whereas a small block is referred to as a "Mouse"

Actually a short block is the block with the crank, rods, pistons, cam, and timing chain/gears. Some mfgs. supply an oil pump also. A long block does not come with the accessories. It comes with all the short block parts listed above with the oil pump, oil pan, and the heads installed. Most long blocks don't even come with the intake manifold. None come with all the accessories.

Hope this helps clear up the diference in a short and long block

Actually, it's in between these two. The common meanings are:

Short block: block, crank, cam, pistons, rods, timing set, freeze/oil galley plugs and all bearings completely installed.

Long block: above w/ complete valvetrain and heads installed.

Most manufacturers do not include ANY accessories like: oil pan, timing cover, distibutor, wires, plugs, harmonic balancer, water pump, intake/exhaust manifolds, carburetor/fi.

Some remanufacturers will offer "complete" engines that usually include oil pan w/ pump, timing cover, distributor and intake manifold all assembled.

Chris.
