Default Help me solve this...

I was driving around on my new tires and while on it getting on the hiway, the car seemed to pop out of second gear. I had thought it seemed hard to put it in gear as if it wasn't really 'seated' in 2nd. I then tried to reselect any gear and the car would not accelerate. I coasted to the shoulder and from a standstill there was no effect when selecting any gear including reverse.

Facts:
1- The car makes no grinding noises.
2- I am able to put the shifter into any gear position without using the clutch.
3- When I try to force the shifter into what would be between 4th and 6th, the gears grind. (probably not the input shaft)
4- No abnormal sounds when the car is in neutral or a gear is selected with the clutch released.
5- No codes.
6- The shifter always slides into any gear position without getting hung up on a gear as it would normally when the car is off.
7- No fluid leaks.

Linkage? Take a guess. I am ripping it apart this week.

if you grind when selecting 4th or 6th, that means linkage ok. Sounds like busted shaft or forks in tranny. I would have a tranny on stand by when you drop yours. This way you can put it all back together at same time. Are you doing this job on the garage floor? It really stinks to do it on a floor with car on jack stands. I just did that to mine a month ago (new diff and tranny). Hopefully you have access to a lift and tranny jack. good luck!!

We can hope but......aircraft hangar floor....I always wanted to change my clutch there too

It doesnt grind going into any gear....4+6th included....it grinds when I try to force it into what would be between 4th and 6th.....on the gate.

Notice any noise at that instant, like a bang, or pop, or small boom/clank?

Yes, low level pop like it popped out of gear.......can't be the input shaft....no grinding could be present and there is no noise at all when a gear is selected.
I tis as if the shifter doesn't encounter a gear. If I try to shift into the stop between some gears, it grinds.

No other guesses??!! I pulled out the shifter and got under the car. I see no linkage issues. Grinding near 4th/6th gear suggests the input shart is ok....can't be a fork since there are different ones for each of 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and reverse.
