I was cruising along around 125 for a few minutes yesterday and then very gradually coasted to 90. All of a sudden I hear several what appear to be backfires. At first I thought it was another car but then I heard a few more after slowing down to 70 or so with no other cars in sight. After stopping for a while and then running around 70 for another hour or so I heard nothing else. Any idea what would cause something like this? I've had this car for years and never heard anything like this including coasting down from much higher speeds than this. (2000 CPE with Auto)
Depending on what RPM you were at, it was probably your fuel injectors turning back on. During a closed throttle position, high RPM scenario, your fuel injecotrs will actually shut off. When you reach a certain RPM, they turn back on and you might hear a few pops. Not a big deal and it happens on stock cars also, but you can hear it better on cars with less restrictive exhausts.
