1997vette 50k miles .the temp runs 220 235 is this ok or should i change the thermostat if so what temp should i go , thanks forum
those temps are fine... infact the car is designed to run there.. your PCM is programed to turn the high speed fans on at 230... changing the stat only controls how cold the motor will get after warm up... it has nothing to do with how hot the motor gets... a 160 stat means the motor will run no colder than 160...but it can still get up to 230 F. AS some one has said , check for debris at the radiator.. and also clean the area between the radiator and the air conditione condenser... they ride piggy back to each other with onlt about an inch and a half between them... the condensor will pick up alot of pollen, lint, feathers... etc.. and will block the path of the fans .. and effect good heat exchange..
I freaked when I saw these temps the first time too... for some reason they seemed high, but they're within operating range. Just to triple check everything, let your car idle till it goes passed 225 or something. Then turn AC on... it forces both fans to come on, and temps should drop about a minute later... this just makes sure fans are working ok. you can also hear them...
:seeya
If you sit and let your c5 idle the water temp will climb to 230 and the fan will turn on until it comes down to 200 to 210. The fan will then shut off and the whole cycle repeats itself. Generally speaking the C5 will run at around 200 degrees of water temperature if the car is moving at normal speeds. Again, if you sit in bumper to bumper traffick or at a stop light for a period of time the water temp will build until either you get moving and air is forced through the radiator or the fan comes on.
I have a question.... I just got a 3200vig installed and the shop went into the computer and firmed shift points, adjusted rev limiter and set my fans to come on earlier, keeping the car under 200 degrees when operating, maximum 205 unless the car idles some, then it probably will get to 230. Since where I live is fall/winter and the car takes awhile to warm up while I first start driving it, will this slowly damage my engine? I try to keep the rpm's under 4000 untill it warms up
My '99 Coupe used to operate at the same range & at first I thought it was normal too. But when I had a recent full check up it turned out I needed the following:
1- A set of new coooling fan motors
2- New top & bottom radiator hoses.
Total of around $ 268. You Might want to check it out since our babies are a little old parts may start to fail.
