Wednesday afternoon around 4 pm I put 2 cans of GM Top Engine cleaner in thru my PCV to clean out any build up. (This stuff evidently is pretty highly regarded and so I went ahead. I have 59000 miles on my car - 98 coupe). I blew it all out last night and brought the car in today to have the engine oil, tranny oil and differential oil all changed. (I also had the back up light switch replaced). Now I have a problem. I pick up the car, everything is all changed, I start the car to leave the dealership and the check engine light comes on. Its idling a bit rough and when they scan it, the left and right banks are now reporting a lean condition. The tech there doesn't have any idea what it might be...I did not mention to them I did the engine treatment. Anybody have either similar problems or suggestions on what it could be? He cleared the code and in the 15 minutes after that, the code did not come back on. BUT, it still is idling a tad rough.. Thoughts anybody?
Did you replace the plugs after doing the top end cleaner? If I remember correctly, its recommended that you do. I used the liquid, not spray, and used the engine vacuum to suck it out of the can, then shut it down, letting it sit overnight. In the morning, I ran it to blow everything out and then changed out the plugs. It was a while ago, but I'm pretty sure that it was also idling rough before changing the plugs.
And if you can, please post the codes the Tech got. I/m thinking that an O2 sensor may have gotten trashed (but I need the codes to confirm).

:iagree:
Evidently the scanner (Tech 2) only said the banks were running lean. The O2 sensor possibility did come up but it wasnt evident from the equipment he was using. (I dont know if it would say on the "tech 2" or not..)
You or the tech could get the codes from the DIC. I' m sure he read the codes and relayed to you what he thought they said!!

I'm sure you're correct. I just wish he (the mechanic) had a better idea of what it was? At 60 bucks an hour, I dont like the idea of him just shooting in the dark on what it may or may not be... Thats why im hoping to get some good leds on here - that I may direct him based of feedback posted...
If he didn't reset the DIC the codes will still be posted. Do you have the vette in your garage??
All I can say is he reset the codes such that the "check engine" dash light went out.
No, the car is still at the dealers. They plan on "looking into it" first thing in the morning. ANY thoughts or suggestions you have are VERY welcome.
Speedyc5, a code 0430 is a bank 2 inefficient cat code. Bank 2 in the passenger side one. I know this because my truck got a code 0420 which is a bank 1 inefficient cat code. I got this after 2 cylinders quit firing for about 20 miles. Must have loaded the cat with unburnt fuel. I looked at the o2's with autotap. Displayed them as a gauge and it showed the problem well. I put 2 bottles of heat with premium fuel and after about a week I reset the check engine light and it has not come back. You need to run a little hotter to burn out the cat. Hopefully this will help ya.
just talked with the dealer tech and all he says is "I dont really know. I'm gonna have a look at the fuel filter first and go from there...". There must be a better way! :cry
