I have searched the archives and found the following post from C5-JIM
“OK call me stupid but why cant I, disconnect the top A arms, remove shocks, remove the four nuts holding the rear cradle, and slide the whole thing out as one unit”.
Unfortunately there was no clear answer…In addition to C5-JIM, s question; has anyone actually do this procedure with their car on jack stands? Note I would like to add that the TQ tube would be disconnected from the bell housing.
You need to remove the calipers or you'll have to blead the break system and, disconnect the E break. Otherwise what's said is about right, assuming everything else, exhaust, etc. has been removed.
I did my own last year but, I rented lift time. I wouldn't try it on jack stands but, others have and claim it wasn't a problem.
I did it with the help of another guy this past summer on jack stands. No fun, but entirely doable. Remove the brake lines from the calipers (we left the calipers on) and then we did the rest of what you mentioned and slid the whole thing back. If you have any questions about specifics I would be more then willing to help, IM me on AIM (RHPF) or IM me here.
Good luck
I am a bit concerned that while lowering the cradle (with the trans/Tq tube still attached to the cradle) that there would be too much angle on the drive line to clear the cradle mounting bolts thus causing the engine the contact and damage the fire wall.
If you have any digital photos that you can send me of your trans/clutch removals, I would appreciate it.
You can lower the rear end plenty far enough to clear the rear crandle bolts. MUCH further in fact. Actually, the cause of concern is going to be the rear diff contacting the little storage well in the trunk. It's the black plastic thing hanging down. You have to drop the rear end a good 6"+ to clear that - then you should be fine.
Do a search on my rear diff installation instruction thread. There were a good 3 or 4 write-ups listed there. All that deal with dropping the rear subframe. Seems to me, changing the clutch would be the same, except you'd be removing the whole thing, not just the rear diff.
2 bolts yes (transmission mount) but also, you have to seperate the halfshafts. It's never fun trying to get those shoot halfshafts back in!
I'm planning on undoing the upper balljoints, removing the calipers, disconnecting the shocks, and dropping the whole rear subframe, diff, tranny, and torque arm, as one piece.
