hey piston slap brothers. I have a 2000 ls1 C5, with 12300 miles. Ive had piston slap for a year. took it to one deal and he first didnt hear it, and I told him to leave it over night and start it, and guess what tap tap tap. That dealer said it was a normal noise during start up. I took it to a better dealership know for corvettes, and they started it up in the morning and tap tap tap slaping away. They also said it was normal till the car warms up. I hated the answer because for a $45000.00 dollar car, it shouldnt make that sound. well about 6 months later the warranty expired, the car still slaps. Not real bad, but enough to **** me off. I Email about 10 GM executives ( found the email addresses from the GM stocks holders ) and told them how pissed I was with cars noise.
here's the bottom line call CHAD BAILEY in the Cheverlot executive office 1313-667-7153 . They gave me a free 3 year up to 60000 miles warranty on the engine to prove they stand behind there motor. Id rather they have just fixed the tap tap tap, but it's a very little peace of mind :hurray:

That's fine (maybe) for those who will keep the car. But try to sell it with that "tap tap tap" as you call it! :mad I think that pretty much makes the car worthless on the open market!
Re: PISTON SLAP ON LS1 IMPORTANT! (phils C5 vette)
call the number and complain to GM. they need motivation to either fix the car now or later. What im telling you is your not complaining to the right people. call the guys at GM
Re: PISTON SLAP ON LS1 IMPORTANT! (phils C5 vette)
I just had my 2003 with 18k miles at the dealer. They first replace the o ring. It still made the tapping noise but not as bad. Told them it was still doing it. They just finished replacing the oil pump and so far no noise.
Not to get in your face, but where have you been?? GM is haveing all kinds of problems with "piston slap" in there LS1 engines regardless of what cars they are in! It`s a piston and ring fault, They are in the process of bringing out a new design as we speak!! A little thicker oil is the only answer now!! That`s why people are using amsoil with better results as it tend to be a little thicker at the top!
There are plenty of other Alumunum engines out there that do not have piston slap. :smash: For instance, you can hardly hear a Nissan engine idle.

I've been told that it's better for a performance engine to be a little loose. I'd be worried if the pistons still slapped when the engine warmed up. Just don't be mashing the gas when it's cold.
F^ck that! I love driving my car when it's cold. You need to find a good dealership that will warranty it for you. Just keep going to different dealershippish documenting every occurance. Then, if they come around you should have enough evidence to have the "lemon law " the whole car. Then you can start al over again
Mine still slaps when cold and goes away after a few minutes. It was re-built by Mike Norris a few months ago and even he said it was normal! I also run Amsoil 10W-30
If you have some really loud noise then it's probably something else, but a little piston slap on a LS1 aluminum block is the norm. I know a lot of guys that beat these cars to death and they have yet to have a problem with one because of it! Ask Norris what he thinks if you don't believe me.
Re: PISTON SLAP ON LS1 IMPORTANT! (phils C5 vette)
it seems that some motors have it and some dont. Mine is to loud, but it's not right. didnt do it new, and it shouldnt do it at 60000 miles either.
CALL THE DAMN NUMBER AND WARRANTY YOUR MOTOR!!!!!!!!! dont bicker at eachother. If your motor doesnt have it. SHUT UP, if your motor does have it, call GM and complain about it. it's that easy. I got a free 6 year and 60000 miles warranty for 20 minutes on the phone. If yours has the slightest little tap and the dealer said it was normal, call CHAD BAILEY in the Cheverlot executive office 1313-667-7153. I was just rying to help the cause. pass the word
If you don't like the pistons to slap when they're cold then you should have GM take those forged pistons out of your engine and have them put some weak cast pistons in the bore instead. You can fit those cast pistons much tighter and you won't get the piston slap...of course it won't be very strong.
While you're at it you should complain about oil consumption and also have them replace those low tension/ low friction piston rings. After all it's an expensive luxury car, not an expensive sports car... it shouldn't have all those horsepower tweaks that make it inconvenient.
Maybe you should just warm it up first...add a little extra oil...and enjoy the power. sj
speedjohnson... I dont believe the LS1/LS6 uses forged pistons. I believe they are hyperutetic (sp?).
I do agree with your other points... the loose rings do contribute to power and less friction. I dont worry about the noise when the engine is cold.
I wait until it all expands under normal operating temps and then listen for abnormal sounds. Different types of metal expand at different rates. A cold engine is noisy.. as long as there are no MAJOR bangs going on, I consider it normal.
mike
The stock pistons aren't forged. I think they're hypertunetic. The slap is caused by the aluminum parts. As the engine warms up the clearences become "normal" and the slap goes away. That being said I have no slap on my '01Z and the past few weeks it's been as cold as 28 in the morning when I've started it.
I called (800) GM CARES today per my dealerships instructions. I filed an extended warranty claim for my oil burner. They told me that GM will honor free 100k warranties on many of their piston slapping trucks. They told me to give it a shot w/ my oil burner. I'm feeling that I might get it and that this thing is a don't ask don't tell option.
HYPERUTECTIC :bb Now what am I going to rant about...maybe I'll just go kick the dog.
 Run doggy run! In reality Hypercrapetic are just fine for NA applications and a descent shot of nitrou. It's when you get into FI that you need more strength. For example, the 96-98 cobra had a sweet motor that took very well to a centrifugal blower. Problem was that you could only run about 8 lbs of boost for about 30,000 miles before the pistons burnt up. Now throw in a forged bottom end and you were off the the races.. look at the '03 cobra and it's horsepower potential!
