1. Once you have the air box assembly out, then seperate the filter holder from the MAF. You can use a small screw driver on the clamp. I would recommend replacing it with a hose clamp for easy removal in the future.
2. Then there should be four screws holding the MAF housing together. Take them out and remove the end of the MAF with the screen. Be careful not the damage the actual sensors.
3. Push the screen out and put the MAF back together.
Don't do it unless you plan on geting an LS1Edit tune to recalibrate the MAF tables. :nono: You will lose hp and torque because the air velocity passing the MAF wires is what is important, NOT volume. The PCM tables are built with the MAF screen installed and will return less agresive numbers for spark advance and A/F mixture without it.

Well, that's one point of view, On the other hand...When I frst got my Y2K, I modded it with ported MAF ends, (no screen), a Vortex, and a 160 thermostat, and it ran considerably better than stock, I gained 4 MPH at the strip. It ran just like stock at low throttle openings. :steering:
I removed my MAF screen and did not use the LS! edit. I recieved trouble codes for about a month or so. But have not had any problems since. I have upgraded the rest of my intake also.
Anyone have experience with a Grannatelli MAS? Is it worth the money? I put one in my Camaro SS that I had and it seemed to help that. Any comments fer or agin?

I had a GMS MAF in my car....after installing a stock MAF again I got another 4 MPH and 3 tenths at the track :yesnod: They are JUNK!
True for '01+years, keep screen in. These cars run leaner than '97-'00. Removing the screen on '99-'00 helps without tuning plus new MAF ends. Have some holiday punch, and forget the mod. :D
I thought the '02's came with no screen. But to my surprise I have one. But after reading this post I think I will leave well enough alone.
Season's Greetings guys and gals it's been another great year here on the forum. The place is a wealth of info. Thanks. :seeya

I had a Granatelli in went to a dyno, after I got headers and dynoed at @329rwhp and 336rwtq. I took out the Granatelli and put in the stock and got 338rwhp and 348rwtq. Needless to say I left the stock MAF in for the ride home.
1997 and 1998 LS1's have 74mm MAF's with screens. They also have an overly rich fuel/air ratio. Removing the screens from the MAF's on these cars leans them out and adds 5 to 7 horsepower at the rear wheels, with no negative effects or trouble codes.
1999 and 2000 LS1's also have 74mm MAF's with screens, but they have a more optimum leaner fuel/air ratio. Removing the screens from the MAF's on these cars generally adds 2 to 3 horsepower at the rear wheels, usually with no negative effects or trouble codes.
2001 and newer LS1's and 2001 LS6's have 85 mm MAF's with screens. Because of the increased MAF diameter and PCM programming, removing the screens from the MAF's on these cars does not add any horsepower and can trigger trouble codes.
2002 and newer LS6's have 85 mm MAF's without screens, with related PCM programming changes.
For anyonee who might be following this thread, a short update. After weighing the pro's and cons, I decided to remove the screen today. Well after removing the MAF sensor housing from my 2000 coupe I found that I DID NOT have a screen in it. So 96,000 miles with no screen and no problems......
I added a Blackwing and removed the MAF screen on my '01' coupe
with an automatic. Now I can spin the tires through the traction control.
Before the mods I could only chirp the tires.
