It's probably piston slap, take it to the dealer because you can probably get an extended warranty for free.

Re: Ticking noise from engine... (1crazyfatboy)
:iagree: 2001 was a problem year for piston rings, I thought it was only for the Z06, but I know someone else who had an oil consumption problem with his 2001 coupe, and they replaced his rings. It could be a hydraulic lifter that bleeds down over night, and the noise goes away when it pumps back up.
:_dupe: Sorry, I forgot you said it goes away. However, a little extra ticking for a few seconds on start up isn't necessarily terrible--just go ahead and have someone look at it. Best of luck.

There are a couple of theories floating around at the moment. I had a GM tech tell me it was carbon related and use GM part # 12345515 to clear it up over two tanks of gas (one bottle per tank). This did help so it might be worth a try.
Terry Dyson is looking at the oil pump and has a theory that the oil pump may be cavitating when cold. Also, the high copper content in the used oil analyses may be the result of the oil pump as well.
