98 coupe, minor mods (vortex, duct, MAF ends). Leaking ani-freeze and I assume its the waterpump. Also hear a ca-chug ca-chug from it once it gets warm... for about 15 minutes, then stops. So I'm thinking the pump is going belly up. What are my options for replacement? I can do most easy mods and have a performance guy available (although his experience is with C4 and below). Would like to avoid $ of dealer if you think replacement is easy enough to do at home. So, if staying with stock is best then fine, but didn't want to pass on the opportunity for improvements. Also, opinions on changing the thermostat?

Hi,
It’s really easy to change the water pump. There is an electric pump and also a hi volume pump from Evans. I use the stock pumps.
A 160F Tstat is too cold for everyday use. It may cause the engine check light to come on in cold weather and the oil wears out faster because it stays cold longer. The 160 is popular with drag racers because it helps keep the engine colder during multiple runs. A 172F works well on the street and some of the dyno operators say that this value produces the best dyno numbers. A 180 gives a more comfortable temp than the stock 195 and don’t cause issues in cold temps. You can make a 180/185 by shimming the stock unit.
Good luck,
Steve

Sounds like I should stick with stock pump and maybe lower the thermostat to 172. I'm in upstate NY but the car rarely sees below 50 degrees. Any thoughts on where to get a good price or should I just surf around?
