Im looking for a new shifter. Whats good and where can I get them. Basically I just want a shorter one. Not short throw...but shorter height. I took mine out tonight to cut and weld it but its a little different than I expected.
What you need to do is: cut off a portion of the top of the shaft, an inch or so, and using a 9/16x18 die, run threads further down the shaft. This is the easiest, cheapest way.
There are a few shifters on the market.. : kirban, hurst, B&MRipper, breathless performance... they are all shorter than stock... I have Ripper, and love it.. Ive had it three years... many people hate them because they require more effort than most... you can buy a used short shifter from the forum used parts section... some one is always selling a hurst or kirban... I never see a ripper being sold... although with all the post against them.. I would imagine they get sold frequently.. I just never see them for sale...I love the preciseness of a ripper...
Can you get the original boot and shift **** back on this way?
The short answer: not really.
Long answer:
The original **** requires the slot in the aft side of the shift lever. The lever could be milled, extending the slot further down before it was re-threaded. The original boot could be shortened, but would probably look better to just buy a shortened one from Ken at Vette Essentials.
Hope this helps
does anyone that has put in an aftermarket shifter want to get rid of the stock?? I have searched in the parts for sale but I thought maybe someone might hvae sitting around that I could get?
