Default Moving steering column -- header installation -- help!

Hi guys,

I had my installer put in some SLP LT headers a while back and now I want to remove them and put in some LG's. I could have sworn that my installer told me he had to remove the steering rack or something like that to get the headers in. Maybe it was the steering column? Does that sound correct? Is this difficult to do?

I would like to uninstall the old headers and install the LGs myself... but if it's a tremendous project because I already have SLP headers in there, I might rather just pay someone. If anyone has any hands-on experience with installing or uninstalling the SLP LT headers, please let me know...

I just installed the FLP headers and yes the steering column rod has to be disconnected. There is a black plastic capsule thing? that can be popped off and you simply unbolt the column so that you can slide it out of the way.

I dont know about taking the SLP headers out but I would imagine that you could do it with another set of hands.

Go to http://www.c5howto.com and then look at their FLP headers install. They have a section on the steering shaft.

Good luck

Awesome, thanks for the help NavyBlue -- sometimes I forget how great of a reference jmx's site is! Sounds like it's pretty straight forward wrenching and that I should be able to do it no problem.

BTW, I think it's http://www.ls1howto.com, not http://www.c5howto.com.

Actually, I own both domains but the server crashed. Haven't set c5howto.com back up, but LS1howto.com is up and running again. Anyway, the heads/cam install for the C5 shows how to loosen the steering shaft, maybe that will help?

Actually, you may need to remove the steering "knuckle" or joint. It's just above the steering box. One bolt (about 14 or 15mm I think). Just take the bolt out and slip off the C clamp-style knuckle. Once you see what you need to do, turn the wheel so it's easiest to remove the C clamp because you don't want to move it once the shaft is moved. Once the clamp is slipped-off the shaft, just push the shaft to the side and this should provide enough clearance. Good luck. Chris.
