If you check your oil with the car running,, please quit driving ....you can check the trans with it running, but shut off the motor to check you oil,, dont matter if its hot, cold or warm ,, but you must wipe the dipstick on your pants to obtain a correct reading

Check the oil after your engine has reached normal operating temperature. Park on a level surface, shut the engine off. Wait a couple minutes. Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean. Insert the dipstick all the way and immediately pull it back out. Read the level.
For an auto tranny, park on a level surface and leave the engine running with the tranny in nuetral. Use the same dipstick procedure.
